Here in Wyoming, Fish and Game knows we could help slow down CWD by removing feed-grounds yet they won't do it because of the blowback it would get from the general public. I looked over to see where it was coming from and saw a giant mound of burning cows. The original outbreak came from an abattoir South of London but the government dragged its feet for a week before imposing restrictions on the movement of cattle. Many people died and the industry was left in ruins but this has the potential to be magnitudes worse. If only it was lethal to just bureaucrats and politicians but the reality is far more sinister.

It's my primary argument against the current implementation of GMO. We should not be treating our food the way we treat people. It should be guilty until proven innocent. PROVE it's not dangerous! But hey, maybe we just need it. We need a prion disease to run through and kill off a bunch of people before the public takes it seriously. Just to add irony, I'd like to see it get put on store shelves through the GMO vector. That'd make my day. _"Told you so!"_ Who knew that messing with genes as quickly and cheaply as possible in pursuit of a patent war could cause serious problems?

I love Uncle Ted, but he is wrong on CWD. I also see some geniuses in the KZbin comments talking about how CWD has nothing to do with animal proximity. But the more animals you have sharing the space, the more opportunities for infection. Once the animal is infected with the Prions (mis-folded proteins) they spread to the nerve tissues and into the brain. Prions trigger healthy proteins to unfold and refolds into copies of the original Prion. This process also creates amyloids (protein plaques) that destroy the dendritic spins of neurons. The dendritic spines are what connects the neurons to other neurons and transmits impulses from the CNS out to the PNS. This causes the physical manifestation of the disease. Another fascinating thing with these Prions is that they are INCREDIBLY durable. They are not destroyed by the normal enzymes that take care of damaged proteins in the body, they are not destroyed by radiation, chemicals, heat, or freezing. A brain infected with Crutchfield Jacobs Prions was stored in formaldehyde for 3 days and stored at room temperature for 10 years and then proteins from it were used to infect lab mice with the Prions that were still viable. It is nasty stuff and if you like having deer and other ungulates as a food resource, then wise the hell up and do what the experts are telling you.
@MrPayne-sl1ku5 жыл бұрын
What are the experts telling us too do? They said what it was, it’s virtually indestructible and indistinguishable from other healthy animals along with in the short term it’s undetectable in testing? Even with not enough evidence to conclude that it’s able to infect humans doesn’t negate the fact that eventually it could. So, what are we as normal working people supposed to do too ensure the safety of an outbreak or better yet to completely stop or minimize the amount of outbreak that could spread?

The problem with developing a vaccine is that the disease isn't caused by a virus. Developing vaccines for viruses, relatively speaking, is easy. An infectious virus will automatically instigate an immune response in the human body, and the anti-bodies produced are the effective ingredient in the body. Introducing proteins that cause a disease don't instigate an immune response. In other words, the body has no way of fighting back. And in cases like that where the body is completely defenseless with no way of fighting off the disease, the treatment itself has to do 100% of the work. We'd have to create a treatment that destroys the protein inside the body without destroying the body. Which is very difficult to do. Anything you can find that will break down an infectious protein will, in all likelihood, destroy a non-infectious protein that is crucial for the function of the body as well.

A whole bunch of wrong claims here: 1. Viruses dont always cause an instant immune response - thats partially why vaccines are a thing. 2. Any Antigen causes Antibody response ...in allergies that can even be a totally harmless thing. So yes our immune system very much can have an response to proteins. 3. Thats why a vaccine would possibly help. 4. STOP - dude way too much shit so wrong that its clear you didnt even wikipedia that shit once.

The rise of CWD coincides with the first deer farms. This is a man made disease, just like the other ones. This one apparently is basically unstoppable and is going to kill us and become a pandemic within 8-10 years. I am so fucking sure of that that I am book marking this episode as it will be part of history.

FYI Joe, I didn't get a notification of this when it was published. The only way I knew about it is I watched part of it earlier and went looking for it to finish. Thanks for another great show.

I can tell you I didn't know anything about CWD other than the regulations for CERTAIN areas in Alberta Canada require you to drop off the heads of harvested deer. In other areas however you don't have to drop the head off for analysis. Now I know a lot more about it, I'd want a deer harvested anywhere to be tested instead of only certain areas. I want everyone to watch this.

43:34 Aaaand then corona happens 2 years later. Hopefully the CWD issue receives renewed focus after the pandemic. People might be more inclined to listen after having just lived through a period of time when deadly disease was out of control.

43:19 Cherry picking arguments to try and distract from and lessen the CWD concerns... Covid officials: Don't worry, it's under control! Covid: kills masses CWD officials: Don't worry, it's not that bad! CWD: hello 2021

I'll be honest, as a person who "maybe had it" I'm not sure it actually is. When I was going through the diagnosis process trying to figure out what I have, the Lymies were very quick to diagnose Lyme. In fact the Lyme doc I went to diagnosed it very quickly. But the issue was there was no evidence of it at all, and theres a shit load of other diseases that have the exact same symptoms. So what I'm saying is that Lyme is a very real problem, but i think its a bit inflated.

Very interesting. Having open dialogues like this is why I love this podcast. I hope people start making some noise about this soon and raising awareness and funding. We have somewhat a solution for disposing infected deer carcasses safely so that the prions bind with clay and doesn't spread. I feel before this gets too bad, if it isn't already, we could utilize this knowledge to slow the spread while we find a way to fund the research for preventative stuff.

Joe, always with that microphone OCD. I don't know how it is for everyone else, but for me it sounds fine when a guest is not eating the mic. And if a guy talks away from the mic while picking something up, I can still hear it. It's no biggie. I don't mind the volume fluctuating; it makes it sound more dynamic / organic, like if I am in the room with them. And I guess Jamie can always increase the mic input to make people louder if need be. Just my 2 cents.
