Joe hasn't had to work hard finding good hunting spots with limited public land. If he had, he would understand the fact that you don't give away your secrets to everyone, or else the search starts all over. He'll understand in time.
@dominick2536 жыл бұрын
Why? He's a millionaire he can pay for private hunts or to go to very remote private land. And his point is don't be a lazy bitch. All the hunters in pope county illinois would walk a mile in and sit down. Joe's saying get out there and walk 10 miles in a find a spot. If someone else finds it too then go another 10! Don't be lazy if you want private hunting land then buy some! Or talk to a land owner and rent his land for hunting season. They have websites for that. I get your point I really do but it is PUBLIC! Land not private. It's not yours.
@HondudeTeamMudhogs6 жыл бұрын
dominick253 no one saying it isn’t public. I’m saying I’m not gunna broadcast my best spots to everyone. Or they won’t be good spots anymore. Half the hunt is scouting. Some people just wanna skip that part. Joe made several comments that showed his inexperience in scouting. That’s not his fault, it just shows he’s had the pleasure of having the best hunters in the world guide him to great hunting locations. He will pick it up with time and hopefully appreciate the work people put into finding these locations. Another way to look at it. On your drive home you have a shortcut, its 15 mins faster then The free way. Do you get on Facebook and announce it to all of the public that it’s faster? No. Because if you do then it won’t be faster. Everyone will be taking that way. If people find it on there own, so be it. Cheers! Enjoy all your hunts folks!

@Braveheart You are completely missing the point in regards to the principle of the matter. Joe has a very large platform and in this case, has set a narrative that is simply incorrect, which is unfortunate. The issue is not public land access, it's simply that, like any area of interest or career, there are a few individuals who set themselves apart by being rational, scientific, dedicated, and just putting in more hours. The fact is, there is a large variation among hunters, and to ignore that is to ignore human nature. It is like capitalism...everyone has the chance to start their own business or create something great, but most people do not, although they have the opportunity to. Simply put, if someone has dedicated themselves to a thing, and then naively given you that information, don't be an asshole and use that information to be successful, because just mathematically and behaviorally speaking, your actions will likely affect their success.
@rylinmurphy25386 жыл бұрын
Idk if Joe has hunted on public land before, but the way he talks about it I don't believe he has. It's not like the private ranches that cost $10,000 per tag where the elk are everywhere and you don't need to do any prep before hand to find an animal, track the animal, then plan your hunt around that animal's patterns. It can take months to find a good spot that is less trafficked by others, that has a nice Bull hanging around. And if you're buddy that helped you hang trail cams (not a good idea to hike alone) sneaks into your spot and shoots that Elk before you, than that is total crap. He didn't do any of the prep to find his own area. There is an unwritten code, because us poor folk who have to hunt public land have to work so much harder to find the animals in my honest opinion.

I know a guy that took a friend to a great fishing honey hole only to go back several months later to find him and his other friends fishing it out. He said more than a year later that place that had been great for many years was a horrible fishing spot. People with bad hunting and fishing ethics can ruin great hunting and fishing spots. Joe doesn't get the public land thing because he's been fortunate enough to have people that have done all that public land work for him. Or hunted private ranches, which is also fine. Look at it like this: For the sake of simplicity let's say a guy is just hunting the same chunk of National Forest or other public land. He has 1 week per year off from his job to hunt elk. He uses his 5 days of vacation hunting sun up to sun down for those 5 days. Say 60 hours of his time. Say it takes him 5 years to really narrow down a spot where he consistently finds elk (totally reasonable). He spent 300 hours or 7+ work weeks invested in that effort. He takes Joe there to help Joe out. Next year on opening day, he walks in the place and there's Joe and Joe's buddy who Joe is now helping out. It isn't about it being public land (which it 100% is). It's about the investment of time and effort finding productive spots.

I was surprised by Joe not being down with hunters/anglers keeping "their" spots secret. There's nothing at all wrong with that and here's why: Joe makes it sound like if you find a "secret spot" on public land then you're a jerk if you don't tell people about it. Now to his point- sure it's all public land and you shouldn't be angry or get possessive over something that's not your property... BUT on the other hand if you find spot that you really like and you found it on your own, then you are totally cool if you keep it yourself. It's still free open public land open to anybody that can find it. I repeat: still free open public land open to *anybody that can find it*. To add one more hobby that follows this code- i've heard guys talk about good mushroom foraging spots too that they keep tucked away in their head. I think the spirit of "the code" is a good one. So what's the worst case scenario from Joes POV: jerks who get protective and aggro over "their" spot. Fine. What's the worst case scenario for the other POV: people find out about a beautiful special place you found yourself either by luck, or skill, and you get it watch it get trampled and ruined by people who want to see the same cool thing you did- but without the luck/sweat/effort that you put into getting to the same thing. One last thing to add, i'd argue that "the code" makes these kinds of activities richer and more meaningful. If your parent for example shows you a cool spot that they found 20 years ago and it's a nice special spot they like for hunting/fishing/relaxing, then that's a cool way to draw in a newbie by showing them that secret places still exist in the world and they just have to go find them. Real quick- Don't think you should get possessive or mean when people find your spot, but i don't think it's bad ethically in any way to not give up earned information for free.

To help Joe understand why you don't want everyone to learn your special hunting or fishing spots on public land even is this.... We don't all have millions of bucks to travel the world and experience great locations for sports. So when we find one typically within hours drive of home and possibly where our family grew up and knows well...it may be the only spot that produces quality fish or game we have access to and ever will.. At least that's my take as a poor outdoorsmen that doesn't get to travel far from my home and maybe never will. That said I bring people to my spots ,especially kids or New comers to the sports to experience fun times in the outdoors
@JasonBunnell6 жыл бұрын
Re public hunting: isn't special spots kinda like a comedian wanting to protect a joke even though we have free speech? People should be able to say whatever they want. But there is a code. You don't steel jokes. When writers are steeling jokes, I have heard you talk about them getting walked out. Right? Not exactly the same, but pretty close.

Not even close. A joke is intellectual property, you create it and therefore you own it. Finders Keepers is playground bully logic.

but you can't own an idea or topic. Public land is like public ideas,they are there for everyone to grab but it takes time searching for them. Then says "hey the ideas are everywhere, find a new one.
@LeekowalskiWalker6 жыл бұрын
You can own an idea, it's called intellectual property... it's what patents are for. You dumbass. Also, the problem with joke stealing isn't people using the same premis. Just like you can't sing someone else's song without permission, or claim you wrote a movie you didn't write. You are a major dumbass.

It is very difficult for someone who only has access to stateland and can't afford private hunts to find a quiet spot to hunt. Especially one where you would be happy to even see a deer every year. Sometimes it takes years and years of not seeing a deer trying dozens of spots to finally come across a decent one with sightings. Obviously if someone else puts in the work to find that spot so be it. But there is no point in telling everyone and the people you do choose to tell respect you for sharing and always check with me in advance. Especially when deer season is only 8 days and most ppl work all week which only leaves one weekend a year to bag a deer. I will never look at Joe as a hunter the same way again. About hunting spot argument: There are many public spots that we are not aware of until someone brings us there. So until we are shown where it is, it might as well be private

The thing about telling people about your spots is that they end up being crowded. If you happen to find someones spot its free game but if you tell your friend they shouldnt have to ask you for permission.

Joe proves once and for all that he has no real understanding of hunting or respect for a hunting partner's trust. Comes from taking it up late in live I suppose, a city background and no real tradition behind it. Keep hunting your private ranches Joe. You don't have enough time to find your own gem spots on public land and everyone now knows how far to trust you.
@Grexslamfist6 жыл бұрын
bill smith agreed I just wanted Dudley to tell him someone worked hard and put the time into finding that spot. If someone happens to find it independently. That’s cool. If rinella mentioned a spot on his podcast it would be completely full next time. Joe isn’t a hunter he basically used his $$$ and influence to obtain other peoples knowledge. It’s not how we learned from mentors or parents in the Field or at camp. It’s a odd way to start hunting. I think it’s great that he is hunting more power too him. Personally I don’t feel like hunting on other people’s private ranches is really hunting. It’s something else.
@billsmith-rq7ki6 жыл бұрын
You and I agree, but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to have 25 mature bulls screaming at me like Rogan and Hanes on the Utah ranch. Great fun, its still hunting, great meat; it just comes alot easier than two solo weeks in the Bob.
@zarathustra84246 жыл бұрын
I was getting very frustrated with Dudley for not actually spelling out the issue. People put in a lot of time, effort, and money into scouting and developing a "dossier" for a piece of land or a certain animal. If you were to just give this dossier to someone on good faith, and they take advantage of you by using your very specific information to hunt and be successful, it's not too complicated to understand that would anger you. It's not about the public land, it's about the information you have gathered from that public land. If John Doe shows up and shoots your animal, beautiful! But if someone just uses your information to be successful, then it's clear they have a poor concept of work ethic.

Hunting is awesome. There are plenty of comedy specials you can watch but hunting is fun. Open your mind. That said.. John Dudly is hard to listen to. You can tell he thinks in a very technical way. He doesn't really think about hunting in an introspective way. I wish he'd just have Steve Rinella on whenever he wanted to talk hunting. Or have them both at the same time. Would love to see one with Rinella, Cam Haines, and Dudly. Just so rinella can steal the show

Female Caribou have antlers to dig in snow for food, that front part of the antler that sticks out over the forehead is called the shovel and it's for foraging in northern climates with snow. I'm no expert but that is my understanding from the hunter training courses I've taken as young man

Joe doesn't realize how much of a casual hunter he is making himself sound like by not understanding what John is talking about in regards to private spots. That shit's tradition. He's telling you that you're blowing your chance to b taken to any of those spots by real hunters bc they won't trust u now. Sometimes traditions sound weird, but you have to show some respect (even if u don't agree).

@@dominick253 Not necessarily, I wasn't saying anything negative about northern people. All I meant was that people who grow up in a rural environment generally have more knowledge about fishing/hunting only because alot of people here do it. Its like saying I know more about surfing traditions and rules than someone who grew up in Hawaii it is just embeded into their culture.

Every decent shooting spot in Southern California has been RUINED by people sharing these spots or posting these spots on the internet.... people go there and absolutely trash the place until the place gets shut down. Same EXACT thing with fishing and secret spots that you or someone else has found... You will have something truely special until everyone knows about it, and it gets WAY overfished and too much pressure ont he spot for it to handle... and now the spot is gone forever. People should put their own time into finding spots.

Joe has most certainly never had to find and cultivate a solid hunting/fishing spot. Every hunt/fish he has ever been on I am 100% certain Joe didn't find that spot, but rather someone else who knows a spot takes Joe to their good spots and lets him kill shit, only to go back home and talk shit about the very guides who cultivated the spots Joe loves so much. Hey Joe, did you do any scouting in Lanai before you went hunting there?

joe, its semantics, bruh. hunters and fishermen share the spot of plethora. They know they don't 'own' it. BUT, they found the supply of game and fish in that area and if word gets out, demand will exhaust supply. Its in the context of the activity that isn't being quite understood. You like to refer to yourself as part caveman or neanderthal and you bring up instincts in yours and everybodies DNA...so extend the same knowledge to hunting and fishing...back in the day, you would protect those spots with your life to keep your family and sub group fed and prospering.
