That's it for Volk. When you've lost 3 of your last 4 and in that fashion you gotta retire. The headkick by Islam rocked him really bad but since the fight was on 11 days notice and Volk was still the Featherweight Champ there was still confidence for this fight. In this fight he went well with the kicks and distance and then Topuria just exploded when he had Alex against the cage with nowhere to go. He had a great run, arguably one of the best to do it in the division (Beating Illia would have sealed it) but the decision to take the fight second fight with Islam was a huge mistake, as well as this one just three months later.

Everyone knew going in that Iia's knockout power was the thing to lookout for, and if he avoids getting trapped against the cage and taking that hook, who knows how the fight goes. Maybe a knockout happens everytime they fight, but after being the champ for as long as he was, he deserves a rematch. If Topuria wins again, then there's nothing more to talk about. And the Islam knockout isn't even worth talking about; Islam is the #1 pound for pound fighter on earth, bigger, and Volk took the fight on short notice. And you can make the case that it’s mostly mental, because you’re triggered deep down to the fear of the ko and that leaves you blind in places to where you can get clipped without seeing it coming. But then you just end up back at step one, and I don’t think more time off - especially for these great fighters who are trigger happy sort of people when they’re at their best - will do any good for these guys. I think we just don’t wanna see him come back trying to right the wrongs and get kod again; but more time probably doesn’t help.

I disagree completely. We are getting wayyy too concerned with concussion protocols and CTE, etc. very little evidence that CTE has lasting consequences and you can’t test for it. Volk would be good to go in April imo. He deserves a rematch

Well if i was Volk, No don't retire yet, you got a lot more. He should take some time off and heal up. Already got knocked out twice in a row. He's 35 and should have waited after his last fight when he got knocked out. Then get the rematch after.

Head injury in your 30s is something else from your prior ages. Recovery and rest is much needed. The competitor in Alex got him to the fight but you can see on his face by mid late first like the task became sizable and dangerous. KO would come shortly after

Ilia is a little bit like Pereira (but with wrestling/bjj cred). He has that lights-out power. And it will be tough to beat him because he only needs to get through once in the whole fight. Whereas his opponent must be 'on' for the whole fight...no lapses at all. But if anyone in the FW division can go 25 minutes with no lapses, it's Volk.

I think when he's ready he should be given the opportunity. But I don't think Volk should be anywhere near head trauma for 12 months. Fighting 15 weeks after getting put to sleep was just not a great idea.

No rematch period. A rematch should be reserved for close, competitive fights like the first Volk--Makhachev fight. If you are clearly outclassed and knocked the F out a rematch is pointless.
