Same. JRE lost a lot of my respects when they stopped doing the show live, but now that they removed the comment section it feels so disconnected. It used to be a hangout where we all watched the same episode together and had conversations in the comments, not it is just watching a prerecorded interview with no comments section at all. RIP JRE.

I have had a pool table in my house pretty much my entire life. When I was a kid in the 70's I could beat all my friends and most of my dad's friends. When I turned 19 I played in some local tournaments and my ego from beating all these adults and kids my whole life got stomped into the sticky floor of our local pool hall. I stopped playing for a couple years and when I got my own place I bought a pool table and practiced every day after work for a few hours. Then I went back to playing in some tournaments at like 25 and actually won a couple, but I was far from being good still. I still play now in my late 40's and still beat all my friends but when they tell me how good I am I don't get a big head about it. I know if I entered a tournament tomorrow I would be lucky to land in the top 20.

Un real ..sunk the 8 PM the break won the only 20 bucks I ever gambled for ,my friend stood there stupefied said,"f this ,"I'm done ! . I hung the stick and haven't touched one since . Just hilario irony . Sort of juxtapose to yours but a pool story .

Thats the thing right there is the average dude in a bar has never really seen a really good player a lot of times so they really do think theyre pretty good or may even be a bit cocky... we all learn at the same end of the table down there racking em... but the guys i learned to play with were all professionally ranked or trick shot artists etc so when i got to where i felt like 'i can play a little' my assessment of my abilities was accurate but if i went to other places and told someone im basically ok... fair to average... etc they would end up feeling like i had intentionally downplayed my skill level... i wont say they felt hustled cuz i pretty much will not bet... i more or less dont gamble. Just not my vice and when it comes to pool i am an absolute choke artist lol. I just very much enjoy the game. My dad has a nice Mucci from the late seventies with all kinds of gems and metals inlayed into it that ill end up with one day... thats the modern equivalent of a balabushka i think. He still takes it out to play sometimes.

@@shawntailor5485 I'm pretty darn good. But I don't have a competitive bone in my body. I DON'T care who wins. I just want to make good shots.....Except once. In the Army I had a real jerk for a C.O. He got the unit a new pool table. Said..."I'm playing the 1st game and for me to rack em up." But changed his mind and said he'd rack and for me to brake. It's the ONLY time in my life I CARED. I broke and ran all 7 and sank the 8 ball. I said, "Next." with a dead flat face. He said.... No. I'm playing 1st game. I replied.... You just played the first game and you lost. He said he was racking again and playing the 2nd game. I broke, ran 6 balls. He missed and I sank my 7th and then the 8. I think pool is for talking and laughing A LOT with a little beer in between. I only sank the 8 on the break once and I've played an embarrassing amount of pool.

Started shooting pool around 11 or 12 years old. My neighbor's grandpa was a hustler from Texas, we were in NJ at the time. At one point, while under the influence of a hallucinogenic, I could see the grid lines on the table showing me the geometric physics of the table. LOL... not kidding. Then I got real good. At 16 I started hanging out in bars shooting pool every day. Playing for dollars, then $5, then $10. I looked at it like a Paper Route... I saved all that money in a shoe box. At one point, at 21 years old, I had over $45,000 in that box. So I bought a house! My first house. Got my ass kicked when I lived in Dallas in the mid 80's. Playing a guy for $20 a gaime, I let him win a few in a row, then he says, Let's play for $100. So I said, sure, 10 games at $100. I won 8 in a row when I got punched out. Luckily my buddy, who was like Hulk Hogan, saved my ass and took the $800 of the guy after kicking his ass. Oh well. Don't shoot much anymore, but I still have some nice Mucci sticks from the 60;s and 70's. Buy the way, my buddies grandpa trained all of us kids to read a table, run racks, my best run was around 12 racks. Lucky was always better than good, but great players just knew it was a done deal. Nice interview.

Color of money is probably my all time favorite film. I didn't get it the first few times i watched it. But when you begin to study it it's fantastic. The characters is what it's all about. Not so much the reality of the darkness of The hustler. The cinematography the soundtrack. The road trip and all the one liners are classic. Each character is someone you know if you spend time playing pool in room for long enough. The road trip they take really takes you through upstate New York area with its brutal winters, finally ending up in Atlantic City for the tournament. Every time you watch it you'll see or hear something you missed from previous viewing. Kind of like a great music album. Highly recommend it. A great escape into the world of pool in the 80s Not a date night film. Watch alone without the girlfriend to really absorb

As if my opinion matters, Joe is spot on. Everything he says is correct. Paul Newman wasn't much of a pool player. But he was Paul "fricking" Newman and made both movies. Great actor. And he was the best actor in "The Color of Money" for sure. He was phenomonal in " The Hustler" although Jackie Gleason and "Burt" (drawing a blank) were epic. Tom Cruise did spend months with Mike Siegel trying to be the best pool player he could be for the film. (I sometimes shit on Tom Cruise, but then I think about things like this. He's dedicated to his craft). Jackie Gleason was a pool shark. If he wasn't a famous actor, he could have been a professional pool player. He didn't act in "The Hustler".

From age 11-15 we had a really nice pool table in the basement and I got pretty good at it... Fast forward to college, our dorm had a crooked pool table (you had to run some sensitivity tests with ball bearings, but it was off) and I combined my skills with the advantages that particular table offered... So, I started hustling the rich kids... 5, 10, 20 dollar games... I'd throw the low games to win the big ones... but after a year I was ahead hundreds and hundreds of dollars (I played sober, they drank so winning $100 a weekend wasn't uncommon). One day, one of the guys found out about the table being crooked and took a fire axe to it (which was next to it on the wall)... and totally destroyed it. Looking back, I'm pretty sure I could have smoked these fools even without working that NW corner pocket to death (which seemed to just suck the balls in no matter what you did). The guy should have shimmed the table and tried to win his money back rofl. Is what I would have done, oh well.

A friend of mine in the UK Eddie Ryder had a small shed in his garden maybe 50 sq ft and he had a lathe in there for precision pool queue splitting, he was the man to go to. World champion Alex Higgins and many others used him Then one day Alex Higgins Turned up in the local bar looking for Eddie with Brian Johnson Of ACDC fame in tow to get his que's split for travelling .....#legends p.s. What a session back in the 80s

Get rid of all the insanely long ads on spotify then I'll watch/listen to JRE again. Until then I guess Im stuck with these small clips on KZbin. Sad part is the only reason I downloaded Spotify was for JRE and before all the ads it was amazing but now I hate it.

Curious Mr joe why doesn’t anyone really talk about the essential workers who are forced to work when they are high risk or have family at home. It’s not just stressful for those who lose their jobs or have to stay home. I have a 2 month old dr at home and I have asthma on top of that I have a mother in a nursing home under 60 who I can’t see. Which my job at AT&T I am forced to walk into customers houses dirty nasty houses people couching everywhere. It’s beyond the point of stressful do we stay working scared everyday to walk into a home or quit and be jobless. No one talks about the actual everyday worker and what they go thru I’d love to hear about it!
