One thing that Joe didn't mention about the technique: sidekick power is hugely dependent on hitting that range sweet spot, where initial contact occurs about an inch before full extension (like any other straight strike for that matter.) This difficulty in aim/timing is one reason (among many) why KOs from sidekick are rare. That said, I've been KO'd by sidekick at least twice.

That technique is so beautiful to watch. I'm replaying it in half speed just to see the transition from the step to the kick. He says he spins first and then raises his knee, but he actually does it seemlessly during the turn, which makes it faster and more powerful.

These kicks generate a lot of force. I like that snap off the back leg. That is unique. It is hard not to telegraph the kick even if it is fast. The warrior throwing the kick better have good footing. Joe just demonstrated. Remember where you are when you fight? Is there liquid, sweat or even a slick spot you can't see on the matt. They all run around the octagon to check it all out. I was able to pull of a karate side kick in an MMA sparring match. You have to hide the technique. If someone runs into one of these kicks, it is a debilitating kick. If landed on the face, shoulders, midsection, you will ask for yo mama.

@As It is Joe lived next door to my best friend, Steve Melanson. One night Steve and I were out driving around and some guys in another car started following us. Maybe I flipped them the bird, I don't remember, but they were really after us. Steve pulled up in his driveway with these guys on our tail and got out and yelled "Joe!" and a minute later Joe Rogan came out of his house and started talking with these guys, who were other high school students from Newton North (We all went to Newton South). He was charming and clear and found common ground through common friends and these guys in the car that were following us then left and there was no problem. He was so amazing. Even back then in 1984 or so. He talked these guys down and the whole situation was diffused.

It's one of those maybe-subtle flexes of when people have good awareness of their body. Once you practice enough with your hands, for example, you can actually do moves that stop a centimeter or a bit above from the surface you're aiming at, even if you don't do it on a daily basis.

He said on his podcast that he learned tae-kwon-do from one of the original few teachers when it was more about power than speed, that's why his style is different than most. Watch a video ofg a tournament where he's 19 yearts old, he knocks out a guy with a spinning back kick to the body that sent the guy literally flying. While most contestants merely "connect" hits for points, he goes all in. Fight over. Completely savage...

Yes I know I trained in the early 80's for it. I studied Kang Duk Won. When I was 14 I was sparring with my father and I gave him one that took him off his feet and he landed on his ass with the wind knocked out of him. I wasn't even trying hard. But yeah Joe is full of it. They arent hard with the proper form. Spin that front foot first then spin. And when you spin you tuck your kicking foot until you are far enough around then bring it right out and up. Knife edge of your foot is the contact.
