Grizzly bears in Wyoming is a weird issue because ecologists want to make sure the populations in Yellowstone and Glacier are connecting. If they're not, then genetic diversity will limit healthy future populations, and if hunting is started before then migration will be limited, so they have to be 100% sure that the populations are connected before hunting is started.

I am after the "Super 10" which is one animal from each species category in North America. I eat everything I kill and hunt predators specifically for the population control and more recently to make things out of like mittens etc... When I first started out I had no interest in pursuing a slam of any kind but as I did more and more hunting I started enjoying hunting the different species and would learn about them before the hunt. My appreciation and knowledge of these different species has grown exponentially because of this. I even hunted a Muskox in the arctic (only because I needed one for the slam) and it was the most rewarding cultural experience I ever had not to mention some of the best meat I have ever eaten. I had to negotiate with the village I was hunting out of to get my meat out as they wanted to keep it (they rely on hunters from outside the community to get their meat for them this way) The Africa hunting I personally have had no interest in but I believe in their model of conservation as there has only been two models of conservation world wide that have worked the North American model and the African model. Hunters are a very small portion of the population but a very important part. Its our job to explain to non hunters how things work and what hunting is all about. Most people I talk to are very interested in it and are more curious than against it. We need more people like steve renella out there!

In addition to hunting for food people hunted for defense or to remove a threat. If a tiger carries off a little boy, the whole community comes together to prevent it from happening again. Tracking down the problem (competing at the top of the food chain) animal is one way to do that. My thoughts on trophy hunting is that it’s a variation of that natural urge to dominate nature. Not my thing but all hunters united, and like you said to control populations/remove problem animals it’s needed. The motivation behind it is what bother people.

I’ve been to South Africa and talked to these people and hunting them is a very delicate thing, you have to do it the right way and take the old bulls that arnt reproductive and all there doing is damaging the heard by killing the young elephants that arnt there offspring. If there doing this why not take them out and get money for them that will benefit the community and add value to the animal so people will keep them around. Same thing a lot of other species. These lions were twice the size of a normal African Lion. They hunted preferably Cape Buffaloes which are why so many Buffaloes are around today because even know they have this niche they couldn’t put a dent in the buffaloes numbers compared to what humans could do to them. Cape Lions hunted men and well…. History leads to there extinction. This goes for many big predators near human civilization as well as large herbivores who can be twice as aggressive. There used to be an African bear called the Atlas bear and they mostly foraged for there meat but like asiatic bears who are very aggressive so were they. So we hunted them out towards extinction. Of course they lived in mountain ranges but think of how animals effect humans because they do. Sort of like how tofu farms kill most of the small animals to stop them from eating the crops. Here’s something that I tell most people that will bust your balls quite a bit. Do you know only 2 wild rabbit species are doing successfully? The rest are endangered.

Trophy hunting may not seem ethical but in places like Africa it’s in fact saving endangered animals. Trophy hunters pay a big fee to hunt what they hunt & that money goes to wildlife enclosures. It also encourages locals to breed these endangered animals for trophy hunting and protect them from poachers. It’s in fact saving the wildlife more than it’s hurting it. I believe it was Tanzania that banned elephant hunting. with in several years they had to reopen elephant hunting because they were eating all the food other animals also eat. Trophy hunting is about taking older mature animals that are well passed their prime and not breeding anymore. Good Professional Hunters won't touch anything that is remotely close to not being old. Trophy hunting (at least in Africa) supports local communities by donating the meat so impoverished people can benefit from the animals nutrients. Trophy hunting isn't cheap. a considerable ammount of money goes to pay for efforts to fight against poaching. This is a brief overview of Trophy hunting that benefits not only communities and conservation but also gives the hunter something to pride themselves on for their achievements while maintaining a healthy population of animals. In reality without hunters and conservation, many species that we know and cherish today would most certainly be extinct. I know it sounds backwards to kill an animal is to save its population but you have to understand the bigger picture and what that actually means beyond face value.

I understand what your saying but on the other hand theres an argument to be made. I'm going to use lion hunting as an example, if you are legally hunting the animal you have to pay a lot and I mean A LOT of fees that go back to the conservation of other lions. And the fact about not using the meat I would also agree but if you hunt a lion and don't intend on using the meat, the majority of the time the meat will be given to the locals. A lot of these countries with show animals like Elephants, Rhinos, Giraffes, Hyenas, Lions, Tigers, Hippos etc will be making a lot of money as they get rarer globally. Now hunting especially trophy hunting is one of the biggest funding sources for conservation. Without it the sheep never would have returned to much of Nevada. People pay to enter lotteries that raise major cash year after year to conserve and repopulate endangered species. It's even more important in Africa.

These animals that get hunted LEGALLY in Africa are highly restricted and the reason for that is the animals that are allowed to be hunted are those that are causing damage to people who cant defend themselves from it or from an animal that is killing or wounding other animals and having a negative impact of the species population. Also the money that people pay to hunt these animals that are causing the damage and possibly the meat goes to the community. In return the community tries their best to keep poachers away and reserve the lives of these animals both to keep population up and when an animal eventually starts causing trouble to bring hunters in. Win Win situation. The "trophy" is just part of the animal that the hunter keeps to display what they have harvested, its not disrespectful just pride.

I predator hunt. Alot of people give me shit for it but I don't really give a fuck. I've seen what a pack of wild dogs do to their prey (which is primarily cow calves in my part of the country) I've seen what mountain lions do, what bobcat do. With mountain lions excluded due to the nature of their existence (typically 1 maybe 2 of them in a given 300 mile radius) predator hunting is strictly population control. I don't enjoy putting down yotes and bobcat anymore than they enjoy getting put down, it's simply a necessity to sustain my family's existence. We depend on our livestock and so I do what I have to do to ensure they stay safe.

I think the issue is the lack of respect for the animal. Photos of a big fat guy grinning ear to ear in front of a dead lion will always be disturbing to people. It’s not the hunt, it’s the motivation and the complete lack of respect for what is actually happening. Just have respect for the creature. This is a death, not a game. You’re ending a beautiful, dangerous, creatures life. You should be solemn.

While personally I'm against Trophy Hunting it's not as cut and dry as it may appear. A lot of the conservation funding for many programs is sourced directly from these hunts. Which is nuts.

Trophy hunting isn't near as bad as people perceive it. Poachers are worse. They input no money to anyone but themselves. Truth is people are just not comfortable with the motivation with trophy hunting because it conjures up imagery of say a 19th century hunter that just doesn't gaf. And after that, canned hunts are also pretty bad. Canned hunt meaning, some guy will pay a large amount of money to shoot an old zoo animal, such as a lion. They'll release an old zoo lion out the cage and a hunter will just pop him. But that canned hunter will pay a hefty fee (illegally) to do it. Still, as bad as that sounds, poachers are still worse for the population of the animal, because there's a relatively small buy in fee.

He makes a inaccurate comment early on and in that comment, the why of trophy hunting is lost. He states that on the past the only reason people hunted was for food, which is incorrect on a base level because we also hunted for resources such as fur, bones, tendons, etc which were used as fuel, clothing, to build weapons, etc. But let's pretend that he stated that the only reason we hunted was for resources and food, there still is one other reason we hunted that ties into trophy hunting and that is that we also hunted for totems. The mounted head of a kill became a totem that when placed in a hut or tent protected the virility of the hunter. A eagles talon warded off evil spirits. The antlers of a deer made a wide more fertile and so forth. That is what modern trophy hunting really is, it's modern day tribal totem hunting. I am not agreeing with trophy hunting, especially in the case of endangered animals, but I do understand it from a anthropological perspective.
