I decided to make this recipe with JAOM kit off Amazon. I didn't want the fruit so I just went yeast honey and water. I don't think it's worked. Is this because the fruit acts as a nutrient for the yeast???
@jsymoneguillory55634 ай бұрын
Why didn’t you just go with a regular mead making kit? Why don’t you think it worked?
@sammcevoy144 ай бұрын
Because as a beginner I didn't really know what I was looking for regards the kit i chose. Particularly as the kit was advertised as a beginners mead making kit. You'd think the clue would be in the name. I think it hasn't worked as it didn't respond the way that the instructions predicted. But having spoken to other mead makers post this comment I heard fermentation can take a few days or more to take place. However, the instructions were very jovial and lacked a great deal of info that "beginners" would crucially need to know. On the plus side, I think I have managed to revive it by adding some clementines along with the spices listed in this video. I witnessed some bubbling through the airlock so I'm assuming fermentation is taking place. To summarise, I know nothing of brewing and this is my first attempt and I spent a good amount of money on the honey and the kit so I am keen to know that I haven't wasted said money.

But, there is something about what raisins add to the mouth feel that you miss if it's not there, so not a nutrient but it helps make a nice finish. I also always chop my raisins and golden ones taste really good in the finished product also.

They do give a nice mouthfeel sometimes

Ok so raisins aren’t a nutrient. Are there things I can add besides powder nutrients that will do the job.
@ErickandDerrick4 жыл бұрын
Powdered nutrients are your best option. Second best is boiled bread yeast (from Walmart - boil it for ten minutes to kill it and it becomes a nice nutrient substitute.) -Erick.

@@ErickandDerrick thank you. One question? Please. What is your option of Mangrove Jacks mead yeast. PS. You guys are way more fun than any of the other mead or meade brewing channels I watch.
@matthewflexen94784 жыл бұрын
Opinion* I really should spell check.
@ErickandDerrick4 жыл бұрын
I've never used Mangrove, so I couldn't offer an opinion on it. What I do know is that my favorite way to make mead is to use a starter of wyeast 1388 and a proper nutrient schedule. You'll find more information about that in our traditional BOMM video. If liquid yeast isn't your thing, some good dry ones are qa23 for lower alcohol mead and ec1118 for higher alcohol meads - but you'll still need a good nutrient schedule. You've given me an idea, tho - maybe I could do a video about different yeasts! PS - We love hearing awesome feedback like this! Thankyou so much! -Erick

I really advise not to buy honey from Wal-Mart. Most of their go at products and not honey but instead honey flavored corn syrup or ,more increasingly rice syrup from China. That being said it will still ferment but it will be more of a wine than a mead.
@ErickandDerrick4 жыл бұрын
This is so true in 'proper' mead making. Walmart honey can barely even be called honey, lol. But in JOAM, it's fine, IMO.
@duncemonkey143 жыл бұрын
So if the ingredients only say honey on the back from one company or another how am I supposed to believe or trust one and not the one from Walmart??just because it's Walmart?? Unless you're going to the apiary and watching a honey come out hives yourself there's no way to actually guarantee what you're getting doesn't have corn syrup in it... regardless what store you buy it from you have to take the word of what's on the back of the bottle...

Out side of making sure I sanitize I don't care what the so called rules are its my mead and I'll make it however I want. With that set aside I recwntly made a mead that is a riff on MT. Dew. 1ts 1 can frozen lemonade, 1 can frozen limeade, 1 can frozen orange juice 2 Oranges, 1 lemon, 1 lime and an Oleo Saccharum made of the peels and sugar that I added to the mead and will make later to back sweeten. I used champagne yeast. I call it Skeeter Pee Dew.

Can you share a basic recipe with minimal available ingredients at home
@ErickandDerrick3 жыл бұрын
@@bharatamarnani7879 JAOM is pretty simple, but if you want the easiest of all, try this one - kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3mpnX6hidScesU. It's a hydromel (low alcohol mead). Out of every mead this one is the simplest - it's just 4 ingredients - honey, water, yeast, and nutrient! You can even make it simpler - use bread yeast! Get three packs of bread yeast. Boil two packs in water for about 20 minutes to kill it, then use it as nutrient. Pitch the other pack dry into the must! You won't get best results like this, but it'll get the job done! It won't turn out gross or anything. Alternatively, you could try a cyser! We haven't done a video about that, yet, but we will, soon! Cyser is mead and cider mixed together. Buy a gallon of PRESERVATIVE FREE apple juice and a couple pounds of honey, mix them together and add yeast and nutrient! You can even do this in the gallon jug that you bought the apple juice in, though you'll have to pour some of the juice out to fit the honey in. OK, I really want to do a video about this, now! Keep an eye out for it! If you are short on homebrewing equipment, check the description of any of our videos for the mead making kit from Home Brew Ohio. It's only $40 and it has EVERYTHING you need to make mead (in one gallon batches). That kit really is the best starting point for mead making. It even comes with some yeast and nutrients!
