That doesnt make any sense because when you get to shopping music, that means you have made it. The one thing haters do but isnt smart enough to realize is, they claim that when you are adored by the masses , you for some reason have sold out because they couldnt do that. Mos Def is only known in a small, let me rephrase that, an extremely small, segment of the game because he wasnt talented enough to go beyond the small block he was on. THATS IT! Its like the drug dealer criticizing the mob boss saying he no longer stand out on the block, hustle on the streets and get shot at and be in the game because now, he sits in his mansion and control the entire cartel and call hits from his private plane .. MOS def is the drug dealer on his block, that couldnt expand beyond his block and drake is that drug dealer who started on a block and now runs the entire cartel in the country. The goal in business is to make money and most def didnt go to school so he had no clue about BUSINESS IN MUSIC BUSINESS!

This is such an elegant and eloquent diss. So many layers: a "target in HOUSTON", "shopping", "so many products" "everything is here" "I love this mall", "when it collapses".. "the empire" "buying and selling", it's not hate it's a POV, a perspective. Maybe the fact that it was a jab, the way he said it was hilarious, dilutes the content: Drake is pop in a sense that is consumer based for the masses who want something just because, not because of the quality of the goods, not because there is artistry to it. Mos Def ain't lying.

Why do we call any and every unpopular opinion hate? When Joe gave his honest critique of Drake's last album he was labeled a hater also. It is true that without any malice in your heart, you can give an honest opinion that may be unfavorable to others who simply may not see things from your perspective or agree with it altogether. Joe clearly is aware of this because he stops himself from making a point @3:25 because he knows he'd be put back into that "hater" box he so often finds himself in when giving his (very educated) opinion that is found unfavorable to others. Primarily that artist fans. I like the unapologetic Joe that callees it like he sees it and creates a space where TRUE opinions and views are shared. Not watered down ones where everyone expected to be buddies. Everyone isn't going to like what you do or your opinion (when asked) about what they are doing. Let's stop calling them haters.

Most def is about the culture. Drake is about moving units. To be fair to Drake though I don't have a problem with it. You can't deny the talent. And it's okay to go that route. But when going that route you can never be considered a top 5 or 10 emcee. That's what makes Lil Wayne, Jay z, Eminem so impressive. Cus they have the numbers and they are emcees at its core.

Sounds a little pretentious. Art always gets annoying with the whole purists vs. pop niggas just having fun thing. I think Freddy Mercury said it best, you get tired of making serious songs all the time. Art is about having fun too. Plus, people tend to put Drake in a box when he can do both. He can make fun pop music, but he also has bars and clearly respects and spends time on his craft. I don't get how you can listen to songs like the Middle of the Ocean or If the Shoe Fits and marginalize him as a pop rapper just because the nigga can make a Nice for What as well. It's like mfs pick and choose what side of Drake they want to acknowledge when he's clearly multi-faceted. Respect to Mos Def, but it sounds exhausting trying to take yourself so seriously all the time.

He makes microwave music...music that's quickly made and will hit that hunger itch for a little while but will always leave you wanting something with a little more substance. MCs of the modern era don’t want to have to choose but in its own way that’s what To Pimp a Butterfly was all about, choosing to chase the bag or talk about shit that matters, evolve as an artist and progress the culture forward. Drake chose financial gain from day one. How did he do it? Like Mos said, “there’s so many products!”

You can at least acknowledege the dudes grind...instead of just shitting on him. Thats just pure jealousy. Trying to clown his music is being a hater. I don't like lil nas x or his music...but i dont spend time talking about him. I try to just avoid him as much as possible. I wasn't aware that Mos made the rules for what is hip hop and what isnt.....last i checked Mos did Plenty of singing on songs....rapped about women as well. Whats the difference?

@@KC-lg8qfcus most def is a true emcee. And Drake is just a rapper. He's just making a point. He was clowning a lil bit. Not gonna lie. And it does sound like hate. But I don't think he's jealous. I jus think he wishes he'd care more about the culture instead of moving units. Cus he knows how important he is so he wishes he can use it more for the culture. Most def coulda went the pop route. He didn't care about that tho. And that's his point. But not everyone is like him and that's what mos def don't understand. Or at least that's how it looks to me from the outside looking in. Look at Lil Wayne, or Eminem, or Jay z, Kendrick Lamar. Those guys stay true to the culture and still have the pop-success. And Drake pretty much goes all the way pop. And I think he doesn't like that. That's all he's saying in my humble opinion.

great discussion. hip hop at its core always had a message and it has been sanitised and curated in such a way that some of the artists are consumed with the status of being a rapper more than conveying critical thought. i love how they introduced jay into the discussion because it shows the balance of an artist that had massive success but when you listen to records like meet the parents, you must love me and family feud, those are examples of depth. but as listeners, it’s in your hands to choose what is important to you. it’s not a zero sum but i digress

I don't think he's ever had a classic due to his rapping ability. Any of his perceived classics and strictly due to the popularity of the music. Personally, I do consider drake to be hip hop. Here's my biggest critique of how he's perceived tho. I'm almost 30. So as a kid, the break consensus greats in no particular order were usually said to be.. Tupac. Biggie. Nas. Jay-Z. Eminem. Lil Wayne. As I got older, let's say the last 15 years or so. Ppl added to that list were drake. Kendrick. Cole. I feel like when you put that whole list of rappers together.. you see some sort of unifying qualities with them EXCEPT for Drake. He gets to be talked about with them on pure popularity. His lyrics aren't highly regarded. His flow isn't highly regarded. His content matter isn't highly regarded. He as a person and who he is and how he influences other young black men to be isn't highly regarded. He's in conversations with those ppl purely off popularity. He's held to a bar that's not the same for the other guys. With that said, again, I do think drake is hip hop. And everyone once in a while drake shows me that he is a dope ass rapper. But even with his BEST rap songs I think he should be ranked right under those guys with other GREAT rappers but not quite the goats. If I could put together a 12 song album of Drake's best raps and no one had heard em yet it would definitely be a classic rap album. But he's not consistent with it bc his main focus is making popular music and not truly impactful music for hip hop core fans.

Great conversation. My take is, hip hop is more than just commercialism. It’s also about standing for something especially socially or politically. And we shouldn’t begrudge drake for avoiding using hip hop to touch on social or political issues. His aim is to make as much money as possible. Conforming to purest part of hip hop could potentially alienate his fans and supporters. Alienating ppl goes against the rules of making money. Kanye did it and we saw why you shouldn’t. Jay-Z has found ways to still remain pure to hip hop without alienating ppl but he’s a gifted lyricist.

I absolutely love Yasiin Bey. Black on Both Sides was one of the very first albums I ever fell in love with. He is Hip-Hop. I consider so many of his songs to be timeless. He is easily one of my all time favorite emcees. With that being said, I also believe that Drake is Hip-Hop too. How could one ever question whether Drake can move the crowd when he’ll easily move stadiums? Look at who blessed him into the game - Lil Wayne ain’t Hip-Hop? Jay-Z ain’t Hip-Hop? Come on man, chill out. Hip-Hop is transcendent and became what it is today because it is inherently inclusive and able to integrate all aspects of the human experience. It’s like a great tree able to branch off into greater levels of variation. And yes, although every leaf of every branch draws its energy from the ROOTS of an ethos and aesthetic exemplified in a KRS-ONE and Mos Def… the branches, by definition, were always meant to take that tree to new places and new heights and therefore deviate into new forms of expression. Let’s not forget that being flashy and romanticizing material success has also always been a part of the roots of Hip-Hop.

Can we just judge who’s hip hop based off who’s done a hip hop cypher? Just so this conversation can be a little less debatable 😂 Listen, the man managed to make it this far without even participating in a hip hop cypher. Thats STANDARD hip hop. And maybe Drake has done one but my memory cannot collect the image of Drake in a room with other well known rap guys and just taking turns spitting. I would’ve remembered that. Hell I can even recall JOE doing MULTIPLE cyphers. I remember Kendrick, YG, Eminem, busta e-40, even NICKI HAS DONE IT! It has been said that Drake likes to control the narrative and usually don’t participate in things unless he has mad control over the final product so it makes sense why he was able to avoid it this long. I say all this to say, any OG that says Drake isn’t hip hop, is valid, because the OG’s wasn’t afforded the luxury of skipping out on certain activities that exercises your MC abilities. We love Drake but let’s be real, he controlled the narrative pretty much his whole career, and is how it’s gotten him this far today, as an ARTIST tho. Not as a hip hop artist.
