I saw the clash in Dunstable around 1978. The whole night turned into a chaotic riot. The french girl group Louse got bottled and beer canned off stage. People were getting beaten up randomly. It was a really scary situation. I remember strummer came out on stage looking like Eddie Cochran. He was in a hail of missiles and he jumped down into the fighting crowd. Somehow he calmed them down, survived and the Clash played! Unforgettable night. RIP JOE, and the Queensway.

The secret of The Clash WAS ‘ Joe Strummer ‘ as this demonstrates. He had more in common with Bob Dylan than Scuzzy 16 yr olds from my estate - but like all the Educated Bohemians around Mc Claren , these people Organised against The Establishment ( such as the GLC ) without whom , Punk would’ve remained as “ Garage “ or “ Pub Rock “ . My first “ Punk “ 7” was “ Erotic Neurotic “ by The Saints , on a white label - from the son of a neighbour whom worked for BBC Radio Solent. 🏴😇❤️from Wessex

Said once and a thousand times. Record companies are fuckn scum. Joe, Mick, Topper, and Paul received little to no royalties for their brilliant work. I've purchased - The Clash - Give 'em Enough Rope - London Calling - Sandinista! Multiple times. And will probably buy the 40th anniversary of LC and Sand... All the money will go to the publisher. The man is a genius. And is surely missed.
@smkxodnwbwkdns83692 жыл бұрын
BS. Joe, mick, topper, and Paul have all received millions in royalties and still receive them today. Stop lying or speaking on topics you don’t know anything about.

@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 Thx Dad. Glad we got your infinite wisdom to guide us. But beside you baseless and pitiful opinion. The Clash upon returning from an American tour - fired their manager due to financial and artistic issues. This is not a secret and is common knowledge. Watch The Last testament.
@smkxodnwbwkdns83692 жыл бұрын
@@99man and that negates the fact they earned royalties or that the clash albums have steadily sold over time? Did you ever hear of the story of mick jones finding topper living in a squat addicted to heroin, throwing him in rehab, and getting him on the drum seat in his new band, wheres at some point informing him he would be receiving a quarter of a million in royalties? After which topper left the band to blow it all on heroin addiction after two years. It took a while but the clash broke even by about 1981 or 1982, before they they were in debt to their label. Their albums also didn’t stop selling after they broke up. Every decade until Napster collapsed the music industry they saw another few million albums sold worth of royalties. Plus the air play of songs like “rock the casbasi” and “London calling” and it’s use in television and movies, their music is valuable . Joe strummer was worth a million dollars after he died and is worth even more now.
@99man2 жыл бұрын
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 I believe you just proved my point. Original statement was about how the ALL record companies / publishers (especially Epic music) are greedy assholes. Joe was worth about 1 million pounds in 2002 - correct. The Clash have sold 6.5 million albums. Not including singles and copyrighted material. If you know anything about the music industry, the artist gets no preferential treatment (unless they are a multi-million seller) and the dictate their own contract. Bono and Edge are each worth over $500 million. While Alannah Myles sell six million albums and files for bankruptcy. But we can nitpick over who should get what. In the end the artist is making the material the public is paying to hear. NOT - "hey I hear SONY records have a new album out today. Lets all listen to it".

He’s great. I met Joe and he was so accommodating and kind. I wrote a Huge heartfelt piece in the NME condolence book with title, ‘Joe Strummer is dead, long live Joe Strummer’ and it was plagiarised by a jurno and published in the NME. Then a T- shirt came out with the slogan on it, stating inspired by the NME article. I wrote the T shirt guy a letter Explaining that it was my heartfelt words, not some journo genius and they sent me a free T-shirt. I didn’t care about the T shirt. I cared more that some clown, some lazy so and so had done a copy and paste job using my words and published it as they’re own. Joe would definitely be pissed off about that. Stay free !

The Strummer interview footage is priceless for its concise insightfulness, especially after reading three Clash and Strummer biographies in a row. However, this great footage couldn't be in a more poorly conceived documentary if it tried, between the young narrator's cliches like "punk poet," "carburetor at full choke" etc and the firing of Topper Headon and Mick Jones shown in the wrong sequence. This is a documentary made by and for people who don't care about the Clash, and as such, I find it offensive. Its creators would do better to disappear into their "smart" phones, their next pint of Guinness, or both.

Good documentary, he's a very cool guy, I had the pleasure of drinking all night with this guy and chatting shit all night and into the morning, drinking wine out of a box backstage at Glastonbury 2005, me and him were around a fire and taking it in turns to put records on the decks, he commended me for the choice of Little Bitch by The Specials. The thing is, I didn't know who he was until I went home and googled his name. We met up at other festivals after that, and he knew I was always blagging it in but he always had time for me and my mate no matter who was hounding him backstage. Very cool guy, he had a lot of cool things to say, and he'd love nothing more than having a pint and a chat. I'll always remember that up all night banter with a cool guy, drinking box wine until the sun rises, it just so happened to be Joe Strummer
