The ESEE 5 is a very thick survival knife that can baton like a champ. The saber grind makes it perfect for that. The ESEE 6 is more of an all-purpose utility/defense/tactical type of blade (especially the double edge version). Unlike the ESEE 5, the ESEE 6 has a full flat grind that makes it a better slicer. I removed the black coating on mine so it can now be used for food prep as well. The black coating has to be removed if you use it for food prep because the coating is toxic.

I have a tops TSK, perfect sheath and the knife was exactly what I wanted. The 420hc steel was crappy and the edge rolled all the time. I contacted tops and they would not replace it, I had the blue slip and everything

I really love the idea of the double edged tanto point, but not a big fan of the saw back patter. If comes down to saw back, the pattern on M9 or AKM bayonet is what I prefer. Much more efficient, smaller chance to get stuck, and also able to double as a metal file if necessary. The weight and balance on this knife makes it hard to will as a weapon, but chops quite well. The thing I dislike the most is the deal with TOPS knives. In order to get the partially serrated edge, the only option is to order it directly from TOPS, which makes it a custom made and they charge the full MSRP with customization fee, way more expensive than the street price.

I have seen some on Ebay. Discontinued knives are always being sold on Ebay. As long as the seller has a rating of 99% or above you can trust them. Also, PayPal makes it very easy to get a refund if the seller pulls any funny business.

I'm sure that plenty of people will disagree with me but I don't believe in just having one knife. I keep multiple knives on or near me for different purposes - ranging from a Ka-bar to my Boker auto-open pocket knife. Carrying a few knives is worth whatever "weight" they add.

I absolutely agree - I worked in aerospace for 3 decades and our policy for most systems was we always had backups - always doubled up and with good reason, because s**t happens. And it's a good idea to have a backup blade on you because that same philosophy works with knives and the bush as well.

I'd say that one should always carry at least 3 blades when going out into the wilderness (a small bushcraft knife for firestarting and feathersticking, a large chopping blade like a heavy duty survival knife or axe, and a double edge fighting blade for backup when their primary weapon (usually a gun) fails or is out of ammo.

Where I'm at a long knife has more use than a knife. it allows you to baton through super large pieces of wood, chop, and clear brush. whereas an axe is a lot more limited in its uses.

+Arizona Survivalist I assume you live in AZ so your argument makes a lot of sense, but for people who live in forested areas it might not because we use hatchets to process firewood and you probably don't need to do much processing so where for you this knife style (a long knife) would be a good choice (though i'd still like to carry at least an opinel or mora for fine work and food prep) but for people like myself it's ludicrous to propose carrying something like that because a saw and hatchet will do a much better job. Just my 2 cents

ZombieFighterOf2001​ Not sure if you've ever been to AZ, but here we get everything from scrub brush to 100 foot tall pines, you need a tool that can handle it all. While a large knife isn't the best for large trees or extremely thin plants, it's the best compromise. Especially when my activities can take me through multiple zones. My trips in Ohio have the same problem, especially during the summer. I carry an axe, and all the sudden I find myself needing a machete. So to keep myself from dragging around an extra few pounds in gear I just found the best of both worlds and bought an ESEE Junglas and a Jeff White Forest tool, all of the sudden all those problems went away. Nutnfancy has a good explanation on the "Big Knife" thinking, I highly reccomend you watch it

Arizona Survivalist I have watched the video several times and personally i don't really agree with his line of thinking (just my opinion) and while i do respect yours and his opinion my theory is the reason he prefers the large knife+saw combo is because it might be a bit lighter considering the guy carries 80-90lbs on his trips, i however never carried more than 30lbs (probably not even that much, i carry very little equipment but i stay comfortable) so to me an axe is no issue so i can carry it, and with a bowsaw+small knife it makes a great pair, but that is for MY AREA, for you (which i assume is AZ) like you said, the places go from scrubland to thick forests so it would make sense for you to carry a large knife, especially if you don't need to process large pieces of wood.

TOPS makes a decent blade . The saw on this knife doesn't work very well and is the first place where the blade will snap using heavy lateral pressure - the top guard needs to be removed if it is going to be used for woods - desert - jungle or arctic environments . A tanto ( not "tonto" ) grind is a poor choice for a blade used for quartering - butchering and skinning medium to large game . This would be an ok choice for combat / survival in a hostile environment .

I've had several knives in my past with saw on spine of a blade and serrated portion of a cutting blade. It's just useless. It's dose not do a job and it's always on my way . You can cut 550 with plain edge with no problem , and you will spend much more energy cutting branch with this type of saw than braking with your hands. Do you agree ??

This is the best knife ever, the kabar does not even come close. Add a lanyard on both front and back holes for great handling. It has a lot of mass behind it, but it is not heavy, out of this world feel in the hand. In damage and ability to strike from any angle, it is probably closer to my best tomahawk than to other knives. And yet they discontinued it... I can't understand that, maybe it did not sell well... I own one, I wish I had bought 3 so I would dare to really use one thoroughly instead of keeping it carefully... Best combat knife, and one of the best survival knife overall, but it would be better to have a mora on the side for detail work, and a "sacrificed" blade for batoning.

@@BigDaddySwingingMeat I had those dumb Tops knives as well in the past. I was not impressed. Lots of gimmick. Ridges on places that were annoying and useless. Even the BOB knife has those stupid ridges 'for the thumb' . When I fact, they were a hindrance in use. Too thick blades. Too low sabre grinds, making the edge stupid thick. Many handles were completely uncomfortable in use. And then paying 300 euro for it? I left that BS behind me.

@@Ve-suvius The "ridges" are called jimping. Jimping allows for more control of the blade when choking up on the handle for finer tasks. If you weren't completely illiterate about knives then you'd know this. The best selling Tops knives (like the Steel Eagle with no sawteeth on the spine) are perfect for batoning wood. Joe's knife isn't the best Tops has to offer (also it was discontinued by Tops due to low sales) but Tops makes other knives (like the original Steel Eagle) that are absolutely perfect for processing wood and other bushcraft tasks. You have a lot to learn, son.

wrong- teti allegedly killed 2 dogs, when the crew freaked out, he went out and brought back to their hotel, a cat, that was sliced up with a knife, tried to say the cat was attacked by the dogs and that's why he killed them. the cat died. teti then tried to force the crew to swear they wouldn't speak on it again and recorded it on his phone video- when they refused, he threatened to kill them and their families. that is why theY snuck the crew to a new hotel, and out of bolivia without telling teti, then had security escort teti to the airport and put his mentally deranged butt on a plane, then discovery channel issued a "lock door and call police" order with teti's mug shots, left, right and front on the order. this order and the email issuing it was subpoenaed and proven fact. so, sorry, that is not how a hero acts nor is it how a hero is treated. discovery knows teti is a dangerous and unstable person that's why they fired him in the middle of a season, in the middle of an episode, used old footage to wrap that show, replaced teti with an emergency casting by discovery using french horwitz, who confirmed these facts with all the folks who were canidate replacements. i have the statements from them, from the folks on the ground in bolivia and from the crew before cody was wrongly fired. so, these things were going on before teti sued the special forces and was proven a liar, forger and fraud, they were going on when the hawke family got a protective order against teti for life and they went on right up until teti turned on discovery themselves. these facts are documented, so are other facts that teti had serious issues before discovery hired him and during each of the 5 times they renewed his contract and failed to dO basic due diligence. so, yeah, i speak truth, i have the facts and the world is gonna see them in court and/or in a book- the truth will be known and shown so that others do not have to die in vain. discovery is still airing his shows, knowing he is a liar, fraud and menace to society, they commit stolen valor and false advertising every time they do, and they risk more lives both with his unqualified advice in his shows and with the potential for putting him back on the air if others continue to wrongly think he is legit. so, everytime i get attacked, i will post more and more truth and i will post it multiple times on the attacking thread- so the fakes can't delete my truth and continue to hide and i will share it on other posts so the truth will only grow with each attempt to attack and lie. wrong- teti allegedly killed 2 dogs, when the crew freaked out, he went out and brought back to their hotel, a cat, that was sliced up with a knife, tried to say the cat was attacked by the dogs and that's why he killed them. the cat died. teti then tried to force the crew to swear they wouldn't speak on it again and recorded it on his phone video- when they refused, he threatened to kill them and their families. that is why the snuck the crew to a new hotel, and out of bolivia without telling teti, then had security escort teti to the airport and put his mentally deranged butt on a plane, then discovery channel issued a "lock door and call police" order with teti's mug shots, left, right and front on the order. this order and the email issuing it was subpoenaed and proven fact. so, sorry, that is not how a hero acts nor is it how a hero is treated. discovery knows teti is a dangerous and unstable person that's why they fired him in the middle of a season, in the middle of an episode, used old footage to wrap that show, replaced teti with an emergency casting by discovery using french horwitz, who confirmed these facts with all the folks who were canidate replacements. i have the statements from them, from the folks on the ground in bolivia and from the crew before cody was wrongly fired. so, these things were going on before teti sued the special forces and was proven a liar, forger and fraud, they were going on when the hawke family got a protective order against teti for life and they went on right up until teti turned on discovery themselves. these facts are documented, so are other facts that teti had serious issues before discovery hired him and during each of the 5 times they renewed his contract and failed to due basic due diligence. so, yeah, i speak truth, i have the facts and the world is gonna see them in court and/or in a book- the truth will be known and shown so that others do not have to die in vain. discovery is still airing his shows, knowing he is a liar, fraud and menace to society, they commit stolen valor and false advertising every time they do, and they risk more lives both with his unqualified advice in his shows and with the potential for putting him back on the air if others continue to wrongly think he is legit. so, everytime i get attacked, i will post more and more truth and i will post it multiple times on the attacking thread- so the fakes can't delete my truth and continue to hide and i will share it on other posts so the truth will only grow with each attempt to attack and lie. Zero Tolerance only makes folding knives. They don't make fixed blades. Folding knives are not full tang and therefore are not sufficient for a survival knife.
