A 101st veteran said before his jumps there'd be cartons of cigarettes on tables-take as many as you can find the room to stuff them somewhere. The idea was cigarettes could be used for bartering and bribing locals where they landed. He also said they had trays of small morphine syringes that you could help yourself to. He said it was a small comfort knowing what you were about to jump into that at least if you got wounded or dying in your death throes pain would be minimized. He also said American cigarettes were highly coveted-especially in Paris where one pack would guarantee the ugliest man a lay.

Idk about world war 2 but in world war 1 some American units were issued brass knuckles with a blade at the end referred to as a trench knife. That and Americans really weren't as focused on public relations and how brass knuckles looks in terms of optics than they are today. Even war has to be sanitized nowadays but back then when it came to doing what needed to be done and the equipment to do it they really just "sent it" so to speak.
