Having just heard the song of Joe Walker's Mare, I will tell you the story of Tom Hand's Mule. Ol' Tom was a well-known character in Culpeper County, in VA. Well, one day a well-to-do stranger happened by and he and Tom started to talkin', and pretty soon the conversation turned to a mule of Tom's, standin' over by a tree. Well, the stranger took a fancy to that mule, in a platonic sort of way, and so Tom Hand sold that mule to the stranger for $25, Tom helping him get the mule in the stranger's horse trailer. The next afternoon, Tom Hand's phone rang and it was the stranger. "Mr. Hand, I want my money back!" shouted the stranger. "What seems to be the problem?" Tom Hand replied. "That goldanged mule is BLIND!" said the stranger, almost begging now. "What makes you think that mule is blind?" Tom Hand asked. "He's been standin' by the big oak tree all day," said the stranger, a little calmer now, "and he keep's walkin' head-on into the tree, time and time again!" said the stranger. "Aw hell," replied Tom Hand, "that mule ain't blind. He just don't give a damn!"
