Saw Joe Walsh with the James gang in 1970 at Ludlow Garage in Cincy. He opened on stage alone and did about a 5 minute echo-plex improv solo thing (a precursor to that break around 2:40 here). Must have been pretty effin' good -- it's now over 53 years later and I still remember it very well. 🤣 And that was just the intro to the real show. ! Kudos to Jim Tarbell for finding some of the greatest musicians in the world at that time and bringing them to a garage !!

Look kids, they're playing their own instruments without the many benefits such as compression, volume and feedback control, and audio balance that digital processing gives. Joe is singing without lip synching, background vocal track, or auto tune program. If singers were to do something like that back then, they would of been booed off the stage.

You got it 100% right this s*** rocks nothing can take the place of talent not Auto-Tune not any of the other bad things however Joe did use a compression pedal but Joe knows how to work that pedal 👍😸

I remember when ELO was eviscerated for lip synching during a concert in 1978. Now kids go to shows to see DJs twiddle a couple of knobs and slide a few faders up and down and they call it a "concert".

I saw them on this tour. The setlist was the Barnstorm album, with two or three James Gang encores. Great dynamics as they moved through some of the quieter and more nuanced parts of the album. Joe at the top of his game.

I miss concerts like this. Raw, loud, improvising, pure talent. A four piece band would fill areas with such great music. They had the best instruments and amps back then. Joe would lead the band with just a look and they'd feed off of each other.

It's satisfying that some bands have returned to the raw, buzzy, overdriven tube sounds that made the late 60's and early 70's such a great era for live concerts. That they can pair this sound up with incredible stage shows (Cake, U2, RHCP, etc.) makes me happy about the continuation of "rock" for at least another decade or so.

Ahhh ... it's not all crap, at all. But auto-tune has certainly changed the arena for many. But quality is most definitely out there, my friend - keep looking, and keep that mind open! The shit is most definitely there.

Kenny Passarelli on bass. The video colour is so unnatural that for a long time I thought that 'she' was a black female bass player - how could I not have heard of 'her'? Joe Vitale on drums. I saw this clip on British television back in the day, and have remembered it ever since.

That's the way I remember audiences back in the day. Somewhere in the mid-70's, audiences got a lot more animated. ... maybe earlier, but I lived in Indianapolis at the time, and we were definitely, ahem, reserved. We LOVED the shows, but our midwestern "sensibilities" didn't really drive us to move with the music. Our loss.
