I see how the modes are in the same position as c maj. But how do you get that translated on the strings. Is it the difference in the groups of strings played?

Tempered tuning.I played guitar next to a steel player Sat. night that tuned straight up 440 on all 10.I cringed Everytime he took a lead.Joe is right,it made my teeth hurt. Especially when he grabbed a pedal or lever.

The only way to do that is to tune your Es on the pedal steel with the pedals down, then tune all the other strings to them. The reason you hit the Es pedal down is cabinet drop. The Es will go flat when you hit the pedals.
