In case you don't know the incredible story of this gig (as it is explained in German) is that ONCE AGAIN Paco Sery missed his flight for the gig. So there was the band, ready for a gig - but no drummer. So Joe asked if there was anyone in the audience who could play drums, and one David Haynes said that he could. It turns out that Haynes was Prince's drummer, so used to vamping and going with the flow. I think he has done an astonishing job. He clearly didn't know the tracks in advanced, and he still manages to not only handle himself well, but to also keep the band pulsing forward - a VERY difficult task with Zawinul at the helm. AMAZING!!
@rhythmfield Жыл бұрын
That is an absolutely wild story, and a Fantasy situation for people who love Zoe Z and this type of music. On the other hand, Joe was notoriously harsh and rough on Drummers, so if something wasn’t working or clicking, it could get very uncomfortable very fast I think… clearly this drummer was exactly the right person to handle this type of situation. Paco was a troubled genius and clearly the very very best drummer for this gig, but what a great story, thank you for this. I could’ve jumped up there and I would’ve survived, but not sure how many people really could. I don’t think I would’ve passed audition for this band but I would’ve survived sitting in.
@jimbim4405 Жыл бұрын
@@rhythmfield Haha - Joe was "harsh and rough" on everyone - himself included... but it was a toughness wrapped-up in warmth snd affection. It was "generally" not mean-spirited, but more of a refection of the kind of background he came from, and - of course - the harshness of growing up in a war zone. All-in-all, however, it was Miles who said that you couldn't make this kind of music if you HADN'T lived Joe's life. It was PRECISELY those experiences which formed the mind that could create such beauty. Its kind of funny, however, having been a fan of Wayne Shorter for many years before the internet, that it was only when the internet started and we could see interviews and documentaries, that on seeing quite HOW Wayne seems to think, that the way he plays made complete sense!! An exceptionally unique view of the universe!!! And if you haven't seen one yet - I HIGHLY recommend it!! It will, if nothing else, make you smile...... And bringing this back to Paco, the very same is true. If you understand French, then seeing him interviewed will give insight into how he thinks ( or often - doesn't!!). A very adorable extrovert, but clearly a little out of the loop! Here's a good example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2WWmXaGeNGUi6M&ab_channel=RTIOfficiel

@@jimbim4405 Actually, sorry, Mr. Z was definitely capable of being mean-spirited. Read Peter Erskine‘s autobiography and then talk to me about Joe. Doesn’t take away his brilliance and tough life story definitely, tough old Viennese guy and the most unique of all jazz pianists and keyboard players.
@jimbim4405 Жыл бұрын
@@rhythmfield Totally agreed. Rough'n'Tough but also with a gentle hand. I certainly would not have been prepared to take that shit from him. Seeing as though you are "up" on Joe and his foibles, I HIGHLY recommend a recent book by my mate Curt Bianchi who has written THE definitive history of Weather Report. Its called "Elegant People", and can be bought from Amazon. HIGHLY recommended!

I think in 1996 I saw Joe Zawinul (nearly by accident) in a small jazzclub in Germany. I was 19 years old and I had been a jazz fan. But I didn't know the historical importance of Joe Zawinul at all. I was blasted away by the playing of Gary Poulson, the concert was absolutely outstanding! Victor Bailey was on bass. After the concert I talked to Gary Poulson, and told him how I liked his playing and how cool everything was. He responded, that at no time of the concert he was sure, what Zawinul originally wanted from him. Joe used his hand-signs all the time to show the band "something". I thought it follwed a plan. Gary told me about the difficulties to play with Joe and that he has a hard time. Surprisingly he really appreciated my opinion and we talked a while. After 10 minutes Joe showed up and interrupted us - he wanted to go back to the hotel. He said he was hungry :) I really love to think back this experience.

Sarà che sono fissato per me è e rimarrà per sempre in assoluto uno tra i più grandi nella storia della musica! UN GENIO!....
