(most scale recreations based on medieval artifacts end up under 100lbs draw weight) 200 is a super uncommon heavy longbow/warbow, and is why he is doing heavy longbow training to push himself further. Even after over a decade of training his way up the bow strength tiers. (He started when he was 14) He is actually on par with the current world record holding longbowman who claimed the record Mark Stretton of the UK. @@aeviwright7846 Noo, not according to the warbows found on board the Mary Rose. The bows found on the Mary Rose were found to have an average draw weight that is estimated to be 160lbs @ 30 inches of draw. The spread of draw weights from the bows was between 100-185 lbs @ 30 inches. I personally doubt that anyone in the medieval time period, was drawing a 200lb bow on the field. Ever. I think the 185 and any heavier bows, were used just as Joe Gibbs is demonstrating here: A training bow. A bow to help you build strength and capability, to be able to use a ~160 lb bow, effectively, in battle.

guys i understand you with this obssesion of high poundage aka "My balls are bigger than yours".... but you must not ONLY ABLE TO PULL, but aswell shoot with accuracy and consistancy around 150 arrows daily!!! To avoid injures i follow what all gym trainers says - "if you pull your own weight with both arms it is good". I am 224 pounds weight, i can pull up 10 times on horizontal bar. To avoid injures to elbow ( Joe Gibs has his bow hand elbow BANDAGED ALREADY!) and joints i would not take more that MY_WEIGHT/2 = 112 lbs bow. So with an appropriate training i can shoot it 4-6 days/week for at least 200 arrows daily. Dont GET INJURED! Before going high poundage train your elbows and joints, good tip - armrestling exercises! They work fine to get our hand ready for high poundage bows. From Russia with a bow )

Hi Drew thanks for you comments. I think 150lbs was average nothing special at all and people shooting 180-200 very achievable for strong healthy guys. I'm doing these vids to try and get the average of bow weights up. Its been increasing slowly for the past 10 years. But it would be good to get more people shooting 150lbs. The last 5 years has seen a few more people shooting over 140 lbs. So theres maybe about 5 in England who can shoot this weight all day. Thanks joe

@@Joegibbs-archery Thanks Joe. I suppose that makes sense. Since you seem to be the strongest amongst us modern archers, I would think you would still be considered pretty impressive back in the day. Especially considering you have access to all the advantages modern knowledge affords regarding things like diet and training regimes. If even you can only perform a handful of reps @200 lbs, I find it a little bit hard to believe anyone would go into battle with a 200 lb bow in the past, even those who were exceptionally strong. But if you think so, who the hell am I to question! Thanks again.

@@dgriswold93 Hi Drew mate. I dont think I would have been anything special back in the day. No you right with saying they wouldn't have gone in to battle with a 200lbs longbow. I ment some would have been able to handle bows of 200lbs but in a battle situation you would want a bow that was comfortable. So in battle bows of 130-170lbs. If I was going in to battle I would take a 150@30. Comfortable and fast. Cheers mate.

Joe Gibbs awesome video! I had an argument with my history teacher in college, he was saying that over bows over 100 lbs was not something regular archers could really achieve back then. I was 16 at the time of the conversation and was shooting (not very accurately) a 80lbs warbow. Thank you for confirming my thoughts!

Hey Joe, quick series of questions here: Do you think medieval bowmen would have done some sort of warmup like you do? Obviously not with resistance bands, but do you think that they naturally would have understood the need to be limber so they wouldn't pull a muscle in battle? Or would they have just shot through the pain in the heat of battle? Is there even any evidence of something like that or no?

Love to watch you Joe. I've noticed you have changed from the low draw that you did years ago, to the high draw. Do you find this makes your back muscles work better, pulling downwards? I've only shot as heavy as 90#, but found that the high draw was much easier for me. Total respect for hauling that beast back.

The problem with the high draw is that if you accidentally release during the draw, even at half draw that arrow is over a few neighbors fences.😮 Could be tragic.

So, do you every switch side occasionally? I know some track runners occasionally run the opposite way on track training in order to even things out. Only during off season, but still. Even track training will put different strain on your legs when turning and it will eventually make a difference due to assymetric stresses during training. This should make a much bigger impact. So do you ever switch side to even things out?

Hey Joe! I've been having a look at Shadiversity's videos about knocking the arrow on the right side of the bow. I'm sure you're aware of the bickering online now on wether or not warbow archers knocked on the left or the right. My technique for pulling is very similar to yours, and with a 165lbs bow, there is no way I can balance the arrow on the right, but maybe I'm also not training like the did back then. My own take on this is that people would knock the arrow on whatever side they felt natural, and that in the experience of the people I know who pull actual heavy warbows (not just 80-110lbs) knocking on the right is way more tricky and an unnescesary handicap. You have any thoughts on this? As one of the few people being able to draw 200lbs and above, I think your opinion on the matter is rather relevant. Greetings from a norwegian warbow archer;) (got my bows from Daniel, believe he has made a couple of yours too)

@@arekpetrosian4965 While strength is very individual it's like with strength in general possible to increase the strength. A target shooter who continue with his, for example, 44 pounds bow will not be stronger unless he starts to pull stronger bows. @@patricj951 All very true. Practice, practice and then practice some more. I am actually below average in strength, since age is creeping up on me, and at 60 I've lost quite a bit, physically. But like I said, my bow is a 65 pounder, and younger, more fit relatives can't pull it. Kind of weird, really. (To me, at least. LOL)

Reminds me of the bows where you sit down and use both arms and legs to shoot. With no let off how long can one aim such a bow? Can you hunt with such a heavy draw, because at close range the exertion alone will blow your cover, and at long range the target will hear and maybe see the arrow coming? But it is still a great display of strength for a non-climber.
