From my experience, it’s a lot more easier to interact with people in Osaka. People in Tokyo tend to be more reserved and to themselves. The locals in Osaka are more open, friendlier, and are interested in having a conversation.

In the 9 years I’ve been visiting Japan, I heard this a lot but never fully experienced/believed it. This year however, I’ve spent way more time in Osaka than previously and absolutely noticed a massive difference. Definitely helps with learning the language more and will likely end up with Kansai-ben because of it 😂

Good luck with the project. I have been to Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, and that was amazing. But this festival seems so more wilder. Love to see it in person someday. We have stumbled that year also on a drum practice in the harbor of Kobe, and those drums made an impression. It was loud!!

Allam - I am so inspired by you that i also want to work on something in Japan. I going to be consciously planning my next trip (which will be my 6th trip) with this in mind and try to take a few years to consistently document something that pique my interest and hopefully summed it with a significant work. All the best with your projects - you look so happy as you presented your ideas in this video!

Man, I miss my trips so Japan so much. I agree with you, Osaka is the city I enjoyed the most: most friendly people, best food, and (somehow, I don't know how to explain it) I feel it was more physically "open", with open spaces... you could see the sky easily frequently. Anyway, I hope I can go back next year.

This year is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Kishiwada’s formation as a city in 1922. They were unable to do it last year due to COVID restrictions. Good luck!

Great stuff. I havent been to osaka in too long. Used to go to Kishiwada every year for the all kansai indoor archery competition! One of my friends was a very high up guy in the festival in Mozu (next town over from Kishiwada). Im pretty sure he's retired by now though. Kishiwada is totally notorious for being the rowdiest festival! As you noticed pretty much the entire town gets involved.

I'm a New Yorker and Osaka is my favorite city in Japan too. It's just so funky, lively, with amazing food, endless shopping, culture and nightlife without being too overwhelming like Tokyo. In fact Osaka is already just as busy as NYC.
