Easier said than done when all you have is $20 to your name like he said, and all because he spent it all like a SIMP. He needs to stop b*tch*ng so much and take the red pill and go MGTOW so he can be in a better situation to negotiate. Dave wasnt simping until he was down to his last $20 like Joe.

Isaiah Kyuga I actually have done the same Isaiah, Twice. I had high earnings with one company and they hired an Italian person to do my job at a lower salary, then tried to force me into another position in that company, which would have caused me to have unstable earnings. I took my severance and talents to a whole new company. At the new company, I held the highest earnings on my teams for several years and led them out of financial loss and into profit for back to back to back to back years. When I wasn’t being treated right or fairly, I threatened to leave unless things changed, and they did. However my situation is completely different than that of Joe Budden and the guys over there. Joe is used to seeing an industry profit off of the creativity and hard work of people of colour. An industry who only sees people of colour as numbers and/or monolithic. These businesses abuse their positions by putting people of colour into bullshit contracts and then use that money to line their own pockets or line the pockets of people who share the same image as them. What Joe is doing is bringing awareness for others coming after him(them) to know their worth and to be PAID according to their worth, and according to what they bring to the table. The two MUST match. Especially since, the Joe Budden Podcast has been around BEFORE their deal with Spotify. Spotify did not erect the Joe Bubben Podcast. Also the biggest issue here is that the earnings Spotify was making from the Joe Budden Podcast was bringing other podcasts to Spotify. Joe Budden should be compensated for the acquisitions of those podcasts. His brand gave Spotify that leverage and power. The ridiculous part is that these companies think these tactics still work in 2020. Anyone still getting in 360 deals or anything that resembles that, clearly is NOT paying attention. There has been too much exposure about this and it baffles me that business still offer this to talent. If the Joe Budden Podcast is the number one podcast on Spotify two years in a row, week after week, then the earnings and stock shares should reflect that. Spotify offering a Rolex watch rather than stock earnings to these grown ass men is not only an insult, its a con’ artist tactic. It’s like offering your kid candy if they would just keep quiet, after taking that kids piggy bank money. It’s ridiculous. If I built a product, that I was earning a living off of and someone came along and said, “I’ll give you a bigger platform and here’s what I’ll pay you for the first two years” and during those two years, my product was number one week after week, the smartest thing for me to do is investigate what those earnings are and to be sure I renegotiate my contract to be in line with those new earnings and potential earnings going forward. If that person who gave me that platform keeps moving the goal line for me to earn more and also becomes less trust worthy, why would i or anyone for that matter, want to remain in business with someone they cannot trust?? The money is not worth the stress, especially if it’s a product that I , created. I will take my business elsewhere. Companies and Brands do this all of the time. I pray from this situation, people will learn to pay attention to their business, their earnings, never sell themselves short, and not be con by big business.

I'm an attorney but this isn't legal advice; just an observation. I think JBP has it right - they are in the pillaging business and they're unsure of how long the gravy train will last. They've diversified since onboarding his podcast 2 years ago and financed other deals in the content/listenership direction they chose which cater to the masses -- while JBP would be considered an "urban" niche listener/viewership. Within 6 months of outperforming the contract, they attempted to open negotiations on an extension but realized he wasn't a pushover by summarily rejecting the offer. My Professional Responsibility professor in law school referred to this as the "Sweet Pimp." They then began a string of broken promises, moving the goalposts on bonuses, and pushy behavior to keep the gravy train going for the duration of the contract, even enlisting BS to cold call for them to resume podcasting during the pandemic when his father was gravely ill from COVID-19. Again, my professor referred to this as the "Gorilla Pimp." When you are used to devaluing and underestimating a certain segment of the population, certain implicit biases come into play, including the propensity for low-balling and lack of equity sharing. Clearly, JBP believes they have brought in 9 figures or at least $100 million by virtue of their continuous #1 ratings, not to mention Time Spent Listening (TSL) and audience/customer experience (SAI). However, they are playing hardball, withholding important performance data with the old "my dog ate my homework" excuse, and attempting to force JB to negotiate in the blind. He therefore has to extrapolate to determine his value -- at the very least 10x what they offer. I applaud the team for sticking together and betting on themselves. Contract with multiple DSPs and maintain ownership and creative control of your brand and content.

So...basically your point is the value of a regular Spotify music stream shouldn’t equal a regular premium podcast stream. Agree 100% big homie. Advertising CPM jumps 2-3x for vids over ten mins. Makes sense. They need a different metric system to reflect podcasting consumption behavior. Shittt..I feel that.
@Will-em6ee
@Will-em6ee 4 жыл бұрын
I would imagine they already have the metrics if Joe is able to easily show them through negotiations. The issue for Spotify is they can't possibly afford what the JBP is worth on today's current market. If they were to admit that the metrics that Joe (and the rest of the industry ) are using to calculate value generated are accurate, then this would be so obvious that their earlier shitty offer would be shown to be as disrespectful as it actually is. Spotify is fucked for a multitude of reasons but the largest being the one he mentions at the end in that they have no hardware and no way to generate revenue outside of streaming and ads.

Its cause Spotify can't control you like they control everyone else. JBP has too niche of an audience and Spotify and Joe don't know how to amplify it to the next level. That's why Spotify isn't going to give Joe a crazy deal like how they did for Joe Rogen. Joe Rogen has a wider range of audiences and topics they talk about. Spotify just isn't the right platform/partner for you Joe Budden. The way you think is very much from an entrepreneur side but unfortunately, you are not the owner of Spotify, you are not the podcast gatekeeper. You have to play by their rules. Thanks for always entertaining us and keeping it real. Much respect.

It’s mad disrespectful. I’m with Joe. How are you not going to give your number 1 podcast their bonus after beating dumb charts, they don’t get their vacation? They don’t get their watches that Spotify offered to get them. They called joe when his dad was dying asking why they haven’t been making podcast. If I’m Spotify I’m flying these guys where they want, talk where they want. Give them their platform. Mad Respect to The Joe Budden Podcast. Shout out to my dudes out here sticking to their worth and knowing what they’re worth.

Mr. Marshall I agree with you about building our own platforms however there is also the art of negotiation, Ray Charles for example was a genius at this. Some know how to make the matrix work for them while others will create their own world. Both are welcome. Let’s not forget that Joe turned down a few offers before accepting Spotify’s. He knew he was worth more than the seemingly big offers at the time and it paid off. This is happening all over again. They will always low ball us, but we don’t always have to accept it. And it’s not about comparing himself to mainstream podcasts, he says so himself. It’s about knowing what you’re worth and what you bring them. He seems to know enough about analytics and the business of podcasts to broker a better deal where his worth is acknowledged. Let’s watch this space.

I really wonder how they're feeling right now cos I'd be really depressed man. As I tell everyone negotiating anything be it a house, car, or a job. Say the offer you are comfortable with and walk away. The person who speaks last in a negotiation loses! I am not dealing with numbers that Joe is talking about here but that doesn't change my message in it being correct! Spotify loses if Joe never says a number back and walks to another platform or even creates his own. Money should not be decided on emotion only on calculation and careful consideration. Spotify saying $50 Mill to Joe means he is worth more than that on his own in an open market!

This is why I love JB and something I’ve learned over my time at my current workplace. I also know about putting your foot down when people try to lowball you. I also got to learn how people move once you recognize your worth. I’ve made many enemies in high places because of me not selling my self short. They won’t touch me because I know I’m worth more and for the time it’s a mutual I do my thing and you do yours but if it ever came to them wanting to get me out they would in a heart beat. The great thing though is I’ve already recognize I can do more outside than we’re I currently am and regardless I will thrive. Sometimes you have to see how unfair the game is to those that play fairly, meanwhile those that learn it, get their weight in gold, know your worth Kings and Queens!
