I was there that night. Estuvo de aquellas!...I wanted to chime in on the origins of Tejano/Mexicano accordion music. Before Conjunto, raza in the northern part of Mexico (which included Texas at the time) used to play music in what was called Conjunto de Cuerda (String Group), and the instruments comprised of violins, stand up bass, harps, and guitars among other various stringed instruments (like mandolins in some cases).

Max Baca is a great musican I think, I have been playing the guitar for 60 years and I couldn't come close to him. Now I want a twelve string just like his. By the way, I am a gringo and I like Mexican Music, its some of the best I think!!

Looks like my post was truncated, here's the rest of it.. With the Czech influx to Texas after it's independence, Conjuntos de Cuerda adopted the accordion, but kept the stand up bass, which was later replaced by the bajo-sexto - six string bass guitar exclusive to Conjunto. The 'huapango' style is strictly indigenous using European instruments, and I read something years ago that suggested that 'western' music was greatly influenced by the string bands of northern Mexico(Texas and Tamaulipas).

@MrLinolinares Very true but if you listen closely Tejanos add their own flavor to their music. A slight difference than the mexicano Norteno style.de los alegres de Teran.

Mexicans are Mexicans, and Spaniards are Spaniards. Don't get us mixed up. Would you say that gringos are English?

Tejano music is not Mexican music, Tejano music was created in Texas not in Mexico! Thats why its called Tejano music!
