I re-watched some of season 4 recently during the binge, and while its not without its solid moments, there's definitely an element of leaning too hard on their attempt at certain elements (like the meta humor or parody) without always asking "why" or having the same amount of heart. To me, that probably S4's biggest flaw over everything. There are also some weird character moments here and there that don't help. But looking back, I really can't be more grateful that it does exist, instead of the show getting axed along with Harmon. Even if it was kept on life support, it did stay alive.

I absolutely disagree. First of all, their pairing didn't work because by season 4, Troy was basically an asexual creature who didn't exist apart from Abed. In season 1, when he was much more, well, real, it could have worked, but even by season 2, his interest for women was becoming very... unclear (take a look at the librarian subplot in Early 19th romanticism). Secondly, season 1 was all about the pairing of Jeff with Britta, and if someone was infatuated with Troy, it was Annie. There was no hint. So, yeah, the morons who ran season 4 didn't do anything interesting with it, but it was doomed anyway, imo.

@@SCharlesDennicon I thought it was sort of a build up. I believe it was in season 1 and 2 that they danced together in that recital and they also bonded in that theater class where they had to talk about feelings. Season 3 was much more clear about them getting together. In the episode when Blade, Britta's ex shows up, Troy is the only one who's nice to Britta. He is the only one who keeps saying that she is the best. I don't know, I always thought they were cute, and season 4 didn't do anything with them.

To me I think one of the reasons why the gas leak season didn’t quite work, besides the obvious fact that Dan Harmon wasn’t running it, and why it felt off, was because the first three seasons had built a momentum. Each episode continued to push the envelope in terms of “how crazy can this get?” Especially from the beginning of S2 to the end of S3, it felt like the writers kept trying to one up the last episode before it. With S4, there wasn’t really an improvement, it was just trying to steady the waters and survive. When S5 came around, Dan and the previous writers brought those solid hits with the ACB, the Polygraph, and Lava episodes. Whenever Dan did slow down the show, it was for solid character stories like Troy’s birthday or Hickey locking Abed up for destroying his cartoon drawings when Troy is gone.

I think the most disappointing thing about Season 4 is the fact that it is arguably the most important year for Jeff’s character and Dan had no say in it....I always remembered Dan saying that he originally wanted Community to be a 4 season series with each season representing each year until Jeff’s Graduation from Greendale and the fact that he had to Repilot the series with Season 5 was just him doing damage control....he was able to regain some of the rhythm back with Season 5 but the damage had already been done. The most important storylines including Jeff meeting his father and his graduation was taken away from him and I’m sure it is Dans biggest regret. He could’ve ended the series on a high note instead of forcing storylines with Season 5 and 6

I liked a few episodes but I liked certain aspects. When I talk to people about the show, I always tell them about how they have one class that is based on the history of ice Cream. The "musical" episode was done well, but was still missing something. Advanced Introduction to Finality was cool to have the "dark timeline" characters come in. I loved Brie Larson's character, I wish they could have done more with her.

I can't really explain what is different with season 4. It's just feel different. What I found in trying to explain s4 is that: In other seasons, the story is more grounded but the jokes are more absurd. In s4, the story is bit mroe absurd and the jokes are more grounded. It doesn't make sense, I know. Still working on it.

Joel Mchale is the lead of the show but as he often plays the straight man to the insane antics of the incredibly talented ensemble, you forget how incredibly good and funny he is playing Joel. My favorite scene of his was the axe table murderer scene. Jim rash was also another person who perfected the essence of his character; my favorite scene of his was probably the rap or when he gives Joel cans of olives. This show is unique for me in that the large majority of the lines and actions are things the characters would say and do. The comedy mostly comes from their characters purely being themselves or reacting to situations and each other. I think in season 4, the dialogue and actions seemed like an imitation of the characters, so a lot of comedy didn’t land. It became a generic network tv comedy. But there were moments elevated because of the talented cast. It’s baffling to me how a show with one of the best ensembles in comedy history and one of the best comedy writers could have so much trouble staying on air. How bad do you have to be at your job as network execs to let such a gem go?

In retrospect, Season 4 was not that bad! There were some great moments and episodes like the Sophie B. Hawkins dance, Annie and Shirley’s senioritis, the Freaky Friday episode and revisiting the foosball Germans. The low points were the puppet and the sitcom episode. And I don’t even remember how the Malcolm McDowell Christmas episode ended.

I think given that Season 4 has pretty much been retconned to be a season where "some gas leak happened that made everyone act really weird," it in a way acts as a parody of Community, where everything is still very similar, the lighting, the music, the cast, the sets, and references, but it lacks what made Community so great. And so when you reach Season 5, and Repilot has to pick up the pieces of Season 4, it opens up with a series of incredibly intelligent and witty conversations and interactions to remind you that what really makes this show great are the characters and the dialogue. And especially when you get to Season 6, where the budget has been greatly reduced, and a lot of the main cast members had left by that point, the writing still remains strong, and I don't think I would've been able to appreciate that aspect of the show as much without showing what Community would be like without what it made it so great.

I think season 4 gets less credit than it deserves. I'm sure the cast felt the difference of Dan leaving but when I watched it back in the day, it felt as good as any season tbh. All the writers were same and they did a pretty good job without Harmon. 1-2 bad episodes don't make the whole season bad. Just saying.

I dont mind laugh tracks in say, friends. But i didnt like the premiere. I felt like they didnt do a good job of making a laugh track sitcom parody. And it was just a parody of it with no affection toward that kid of sit com and i hated the laugh track everytime it came on. There was nothing clever about it. Just "sitcom with laugh tracks laugh at things that arent funny" was the joke every time.

I just watched season 6 on Netflix. I love this show but hadn't followed the show since it went to Yahoo. While there is a lot to say about this season, I just cannot wrap my head around the decision to have Jeff & Annie end up "together" when just one season ago Jeff was engaged to Britta... the show started with Jeff's interest in Britta, it should have ended with that going full-circle (maybe this will be a theme for the movie)

That episode where he was engaged to Britta. It was very clear they didnt want each other. They only decided to get married or reached for each other when things are going badly. And ends with Jeff realizing he loves Annie and the door opens because of his love for Annie. His "Blast of human passion" is for her which is why he quickly looks away so no one will know. Its also a terrible idea for them to. Britta and him to end up togther when they have never shown romantic love for each other, Just because thats where it started. Jeff admited his love for Annie after having it confirmed it the previous season finale. Seems more fitting.

Season four was not the best, but if you compare the decline of season four of _Community_ to season four of _Arrested Development_ (which, imo, had a superior first three seasons, but the lows were lower after that), it could have turned out a lot worse.

We all know season 4 is the worst but you guys were really unfair saying that just one episode of this season is good. This season has other good episodes too like "Alternative History of the German Invasion" that shows the study group in a brand new perspective and "Herstory of Dance", that did a good job showing that "Britta is the worst" behaviour needed to slow down a bit. In this episode we also have the first appearance of Brie Larson, she is one of the good aspects of season 4.

Aside from feeling off-brand, the other main problem with season 4 is very simple: a lot of it just wasn't funny or interesting. This is how I rank the episodes: very good: 407 Herstory of Dance 410 Basic Human Anatomy 403 Paranormal Parentage pretty good: 409 Intro to Knots 405 Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations 413 Intro to Felt Surrogacy 402 Alternative History of the German Invasion meh: 401 History 101 bad: 412 Heroic Origins 408 Advanced Documentary Filmmaking 406 Economics of Marine Biology 411 Advanced Introduction to Finality 404 Conventions of Space and Time Overall, it's not devoid of value. But it was a huge step down from the first three seasons. No other season of Community has such a low ratio of good-to-bad episodes.
