Same for poultry regarding opening comment....we booked appointments for an entire year for our small, small poultry operation...we order our poultry based on our processing dates, so, for example, I committed to chicks for processing in October that won't even be hatched until late August. I also had to change my flock plan, because I couldn't get several of the processor dates I preferred. The regulatory system is very hard to navigate for small producers. I felt there was someone speaking up for small producers here as I listened to Joel's comments. Thank you to Joel for speaking up for small producers.

We have a small farmstead and a small processor 3 miles away that does literally everything but I have to drive 5 hours one way to the only big processor that will touch rabbits if I want to sell them. Local demand for rabbit is large and stores are begging because customers do not like buying the rabbits they get from china. We have to book dates one year out and do the math to time all the breedings to hit harvest age for the dates. The cost of travel, overnight stay and extra hourly fee for a special inspector plus retooling of the plant for rabbits over and above the regular fees takes all of the profit margin. It’s stupid that our local small processor is considered safe for personal use but can’t label so we can sell any of it. It’s ridiculous the stores have to get them from china even though a capable and willing farmer is in the same town because of words written on paper.
