The beginning of the end... It was fun while it lasted. RIP college football.

Freedom of contract will bring other consequences. If the schools are actually contracting with the players, they'll presumably be able to bind the players for the course of their college careers. If I'm paying some hot high school quarterback to come to my school, I'll probably want him to agree not to transfer after one or two good college years.

That’s not a consequence. That’s a good thing. Keep these kids from jumping around acting like they’re king makers.

@@bobbyaxelrod5959 I didn't say it would be a bad consequence. Seems like it may help restore a little sanity. I'm sure the schools' lawyers are thinking about this, but so far I haven't heard anybody in the media commenting on it.

This will be struck down by the courts. you can't artificially limit a players value w/out a hard salary cap. The marketing angle and having to go through the school will be this moves downfall

A bunch of old guys that "look similar" wanted control of the players back, by any means necessary

Professional athletes don't have to go through their teams marketing arm to ink deals with companies. Why should a college athlete have to go through the university to ink similar deals? Why shouldn't they be able to go directly to those companies and ink the best deals that are offered them provided those deals are real marketing deals and not just a booster buying a player?

This means if the schools pay the players directly, then ticket prices will increase dramatically.

yes, contracts must be coming next... would be foolish to hire a professional athlete without setting terms and length of his employment... especially if they want to bargain collectively... I'd like to look forward to the "new college football" but am afraid it's going to be a hot mess for years to come....

Where are the NFL teams in this? College football teams are actually their "farm teams" similar to the MLB. Shouldn't they be contributing to the funding? ? ? ?

Why don’t you mention NCAA’s vindictive behavior towards Jim Harbaugh’s advocating for sharing some of the $ to the players. This ruling doesn’t sound like there will be an aboveboard and/or fair way of controlling this.

I disagree, Joe. Big boosters tend to own companies and have good lawyers. They will continue to buy players the way the have been since NIL came out. There is no way in the world Texas for example, is going to have a 20 million dollar budget for football and basketball. Players will continue to be bought as they have been since NIL.

Unless they create some type of governing body with authority to investigate and punish schools who aren't complying with the hard cap. If Texas goes over the 20 million including player NIL benefits, then they get punished however the governing body deems fit.

Joel - you are a great broadcaster and I enjoy your work. But that doesn't make you the sage of college football. Neither does it qualify you to reshape a sport that may end up highly damaged. Try to get your ego under control. You (and the rest of America) have no earthly idea what affect these new changes will have on the long term health of the sport. These changes are altering the "character" of college football - something that thrived and became the marketable product from which you derive a great living - based on a structure you now declare inferior. Some new ideas are good.... some are just new. Many fans don't want CFB to become any more like the NFL, filled with privledged players with bad behavior who have to be massaged into doing their best. We like the purity of the game. We may soon wake up to find the players unmanageble primadonnas - and you'll be among the first to criticize them when you played a part in creating a system that led them to it. Far be it from me to defend the NCAA, but they were trying to bring order to the chaos and set boundries and standards. You're promoting a commissioner approach like the NFL... Like that's a good idea. Perhaps you see yourself in that spot. Money isn't everything. Most of us fans feel pride in our university and agenuine sense of camaraderie that was "school spirit." You helped sell it for a few bucks. Let's wait and see what it brings.
