Stunning. A creative solution to keep this machine in active use. Good job, Joe.

Pretty nice piece of DIY craftsmanship Joe. It's been fun seeing you bring the Voss back from the brink of parts-machine doom it was destined for. The new JJ Short rubber will be a great finishing touch for sure.

This is such a clever idea. I would have never thought to make a wooden ribbon cover, but this looks beautiful on the Voss.

Woodworkers suffer from pointing out the faults in their work, however beautiful the piece they've made is. I don't know why. Well done Joe, that's a well-designed and great-looking solution to the missing ribbon cover!

Don't be modest Joe; the craftsmanship of the new cover is really good. I love the finish on it by the way! I like the concept of it being a "woodie". perhaps it'd be a neat project to make a new frame for a frameless typewriter or one with a frame in non-restorable condition.

You know, this is so very cool. I've been searching for DIY methods of making a replacement pop-on cover for my TYPEST*R 5 and of course a Joe Van Cleave video comes up. I've fallen head over heels for thermal machines, I have two and neither came with covers, trying to find the best way to remedy this rather than just purchasing another one that comes with a cover.

A beautiful survivor, I hope you made a note that stays with the Typewriter, a voice record another could read about why this rescued parts machine was given a wooden cover, I certainly wood...see what I did there lol I think you did a great job, and it's amazing how wood can make metal look nice, not a typewriter, but my Dad's '78 Dodge Ramcharger had these pleather stuffed armrests that sat on this sharp rail, and of course at the time the vehicle was 40 years old, still running and driving, but the years those armrests took destroyed them down to the sharp metal brackets, you wouldn't want to put your arm on them. Lol.. So I removed them gutted the metal frames, also not a master wood worker but I am a SERIOUS Hobbiest and a force to recon with especially with tools and a Dremel lol, so I took a board of Oak lumber cut it down and split it to two equal parts and fashioned with a serious amount of sanding, whew, then stained them, made to fit the bracket, attached them, and they look like they've always been there. Dad passed almost 4 years ago, I'm now the owner of the 4x4 all the time beast. Hard to work on it and maintain the other vehicles along with my condition, but we keep going, Like Give'em hell Harry! Lol, my wife doesn't understand why I like Electric vehicles, Less to maintain! Very cool Joe Thank you.

That's fabulous. I might choose black walnut, unstained, finished with oil and beeswax. The color and woodgrain would be very attractive. On the other hand, the glowy orange-ish color is attractive in its contrast. Looks great. Lastly, to sand to 1200 grit would make a finer finish if not coating with varnish.

Well, that’s absolutely gorgeous. You made the right decision. As you know, I was a fan of the wood look from the beginning. And the lighter stain was a happy accident. Great job!
