As a retired architect, I can say that before CAD drawing, that Add Feet Junior was a constant companion during late night sessions double checking the dimensions on our drawings. I still have mine somewhere LOL. Great little device!

Fantastic! Inspired by your calculator collection, I got an Addiator a couple of weeks ago (Omega Pocket Adding Machine) and have been trying to figure it out. Thanks for the great introduction!

Great video! I remember a leather bank checkbook cover with an addiator on the interior back leather so one could balance their checkbook to their Bank statement before electric calculators really caught on for the average person. Now even the checkbook itself is rather obsolete. Man, I'm getting old and nostalgic!

You use the slide rule for multiplication and division and this and/or abacus for addition and subtraction. The advantage that the addiator has over an abacus is that the digits stay in place if you move it. They're complementary.

I have one of these! Only it’s in alu colour and without the leather pouch. Inherited from my grandmother. Use some acetone to clean the leather, neatsfoot oil to give it moistness and pliability back and perhaps some light dye before the oil. Stitching this should be real easy since it’s threaded on the outside. Use waxed dyed thread though. You’ll be surprised at how good it’s possible to make it look.

This design is really clever. The only moving parts are the sliders - no gears, no cogs - so even a high quality model is going to be a lot cheaper than any other mechanical calculator. Sure, dividing with it is a nightmare, but that's true of most mechanical calculators.

I don't think you should worry about wearing it out.. I got one of these from my grandfather (all shiny aluminum colored, making me think yours was tarnished somehow) in around 1980 and I wasn't very kind to it and it's still working in 2021.

Thank you, I have one just like it. At least now I know how to use it.

The sad part is that no one thought of this idea, until AFTER a more advanced mechanical calculator, was invented in 1623. The addiator is a good invention but its design is so simple that we as human beings should have been focused enough on innovation to have come up with the idea a lot sooner.

🇨🇦/🇺🇸... My mother had one for her grocery shopping in the '60s. I could be wrong but I THINK that you may find that that is not, in fact, brass but a coated aluminum. ??

I have an addiator like the one in the video but mine looks like it's made from steel instead of brass.

I got my today, the hundreds column is stuck. How safe do you suppose is to try to take it apart?
@Joe_VanCleave
@Joe_VanCleave 4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure it's not at the end of the column? If so, there should be a red arrow in the window, you then would need to move it in the opposite direction. I'd try very light oil like naphtha (lighter fluid) before taking apart. And you don't want to use a solvent that might dissolve the paint. You'd have to carefully bend the brass tabs to take it apart. I'd be very careful.
