Kodak Versus Polaroid!

Joe reviews the Kodak Printomatic camera and compares it with the Polaroid Mint Pocket Printer. Both use Zink printing technology, but one is better than the other. How do they both compare cost-wise to Fujifilm Instax Mini prints?

I wonder about something though? What happens when you plug it in the computer using a data cable? Maybe you can use it as a local printer? (though probably not).

I recently bought the Kodak Mini 3 Retro printer and the reason I chose that over other models is Zink paper will smear when wet. Something to think about when buying a camera or printer.

Is the frame of the view finder for parallax correction? It's weird how these new analog camera like polaroid doesn't have a frame in a camera for parallax correction when that problem was solved decades ago

With adjustable focus cameras, having variable parallax correction would make sense, but this camera has such a small sized sensor, hence very wide depth of focus, therefore the viewfinder is fixed.

Do you know if the Polaroid Snap (The camera that uses the same film as your Polaroid Printer) is compatible with other brands of Zink 2x3 photo paper? They don't seem to make the Polaroid Zink 2x3 paper now, but I know Zink make 2x3 paper for Canon and HP devices, and I'd love to know if I can use this and still use my Snap!

I believe any 2x3 Zink paper brand is compatible with any Zink type device. I've used different brands of paper and they seem very similar in results, they all have the blue calibration sheet also.

Hey Joe, If you had to choose one and only one between photography and typewriters/writing, what would that be?

My first KZbin videos were about photography, and I can write using means other than typewriters, so at first glance I might say photography. But it would be hard to give up either one. Practically speaking I can still do both, though I may not want to obsess over both, in terms of time, cost and the space required. And then there’s the old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words. Yet, word pictures can bring you to places in your imagination that you’d be hard pressed to photograph. Since I can’t easily choose one over the other, then I choose both!

I just got mine. Perfect for making certificates of authenticity of my artwork. 2x3 pictures fit perfectly on the certificates.

Test your pics for fading. My collage of pics faded horribly after a few months, even in a dark hallway.

thermal imaging. I'm pretty sure the old fax machines and even receipt shopping dockets use a form of thermal imaging, which is why they fade away...I can even recall someone I know printing everything she wrote out using some kind of thermal imaging printer, and after a few months, couldn't read it............

sometimes it is extremely hard for me to see the view-finder. any tips in dark settings because the view-finder kind of disappears?

That is a problem, although I've limited my shooting to good lighting because the pictures come out better. It might help to practice aiming with the body of the camera so you don't have to rely on the viewfinder as much, this is a technique used in the old film days with cameras having limited viewfinders.

Kodak Step Touch or Polaroid Snap Touch, the have a big LCD to check photo before makeing or printing.

So, thermal imaging not printer ink. Does anyone know how long these "thermal images" will retain colour and detail before disappearing into the sunset? Or fade to a lovely shade of sepia yellow ochre like all Kodak's actual prints did back in the 70's?

I don't thing this format's been around long enough to tell, but like any thermal printing technology, it helps to keep it out of the light, and at room temperature or cooler.

Meanwhile, I can't get my hands on any additional rolls of Ektachrome or Portra - which as with so many other current film stocks have been like unobtainium as of late (apparently due to supply chain issues). I was imagining this Printomatic might be a modern upgrade over the Kodak "The Handle" instant film camera I had as a kid back in the 70's. Sadly, upon watching this review that doesn't appear to be the case, lol. Though I must admit that I was notably mesmerized by the lava lamp during the 2nd half of this video , so perhaps I missed some of the redeeming qualities of this camera. :-) Thanks Joe!

In Canada the Fuji film is $13 for 10. I just picked up the Kodak Step instant camera Basically the instimatic With a couple options. I also picked up a 100 Print sheets for $39 Which is amazing compared to Fuji. But the pictures on the Fuji are far superior to the Kodak Prince.

once you figured out the shutter delay why didn't you show us more acctual photos? You spent more time showing us photos when you didn't know how to use the camera to the point, OK we get it, let's see some photos' when you did and all you show us are close up selfies? Odd review.

And yet for a while Kodak did produce the instant film for Polaroid! Polaroid sued Kodak yet it finished Polaroid off!- you can't make it up.
