This is the first time I learned that Singer made typewriters. This video and motion picture show was made for me. My favorite typewriter was the IBM Selectric.

I just bought a 1960s Singer Electric and I love it. The charm of going back in time with a vintage typewriter is a source of inspiration for my writing practice. Love it!

I have 2 singer electrics one like joes in grey and one similar with what appears to be a rectangle light in the front face. Love these.

Hi guys, The SCM series numbers don't follow the decades, or at least not for series 8 and 9. Loved the video! Re the "belt slippage" on the Singer, the copy dial moves the distance between the pulleys and the width of the pulley closest to the keyboard, therefore changing the diameter of the pulley and changing the speed of rotation of the cylinder that provides the power to the typebar. I am fortunate to own a Singer T82 and an SCM 120. Both typewriters are used regularly. Both are built to survive WW3 and both are fun to use. Over the years, I have owned Olympias, Erikas, Royals, Continentals, Rheinmetals, Gromas... My favorite machine is my Singer T82! Yes, I am a heretic but, for daily work and comfort, I find the Singer T82 to be the best machine. Oh... The Singer T82 was obtained from the family of the original owner in New Mexico for 20 bucks!!

Kevin, you need a little magnetic Marvin the Martian for your atomic typewriter!

Two men with typewriters, scotch and cigars. Interesting. And amusing. SNL sketch, anyone?

Hi Gents. Great video, and thanks for all the interesting content. I have an Electra 120 of the same design as these and love it, but the type alignment is kinda wavy, even between lowercase letters (not only between uppercase and lowercase). How do I adjust that? Also, even on the lowest copyset setting, the impression is too hard... can I adjust that somehow? Any info would be great! Perhaps it would make an interesting video?
@Joe_VanCleave2 жыл бұрын
Type alignment is by careful forming of the typebars. It can be time consuming and delicate. As for the hard impression, how is the platen? Unless you've had to re-covered with fresh rubber, the best temporary solution is a backing sheet; I like to use construction paper as a backing sheet. You can get your platen resurfaced at JJ Short & Sons. You remove the platen and ship it off to them.

Thank Joe. Boy oh boy, typebar forming sounds daunting for sure. I did do the heat shrink recovering of the platter and it turned out better than it was when I got it (quieter) but the imprint remained the same. I’m in Canada so the JJ a short option is more complicated/expensive. Anyway, thanks for the response. 🙂

Great video! Love the dry humor. How long can you type on a battery charge on Kevin's typewriter? Did he replace the original 40-year-old battery? Thanks!
@Joe_VanCleave2 жыл бұрын
Yes, he replaced the cells with new NiCads. The machine runs over 2 hours with it continuously running, on a full charge. Longer if you turn it off during pauses while you think.

Poweriter seems fairly rare? There are only two on TWDB. The battery leakage/corrosion issue would be a concern.
