This kind of talent cannot be taught, you have to be born with it and the late great Mr Sammy Davis Junior was born with it. Absolutely amazing once in a lifetime voice❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

On the day this aired, I was walking through the living room and stopped to look at the tv. Then I sat down on the couch, and by the end of the song, I was in tears. He still had it.

Totally agree with you. In my opinion the 3 greatest entertainers who ever lived were all under 5 foot 5. Sammy Davis Jr, Judy Garland, and one has to give a nod to Mickey Rooney. Who says good things don't come in small packages?

@@robertr8386 ... this was the reason that i watched the Tetethon every year; this is why I and my family raised money every year for a decade thru the McDonald's MDA Circus program (nearly $10,000 in the 70's.)

See this the day it aired in 1987 and was overtaken by this stunning performance, this man was 61 when he sung this on the telethon, this was true entertainment and Sammy was the BEST he was my favorate performer of all-time its so sad that Sammy is gone, and so is real entertainment like this!! :( I my opinion this was the most memorable performance in the history of the Jerry Lewis Telethon #1!!!

And now you know why Sammy was known as one of the best all around entertainers in the world. Singing was just one of many talents that he had.

Sammy never lost being in his prime when singing. Sammy had that heart. When he sang, his heart, our hearts, just broke a little. I love how he came back to this style. Slick back hair, tux, no beads or Nehru collar, or cool hip clothes. Just a man. An idol of all us who grew up listening to our parents records. Brilliant man. Lovely man.

Still have it on VHS as well. Wish clip hadn’t cut off full performance, the combination of this song & “Birth of The Blues” with the emotion he put into it, (due to Dean Martin being ill) & all live was amazing. I was 22 at the time & remember it like it was yesterday. I watched many MDA telethons for years from beginning to end & this was IMO the best single telethon performance I had ever seen.

what Sammy was saying to Dino (Dean Martin) was simple. if memory serves me correctly Sammy, Frank & Dean were doing the Together again tour at that time & Dean did the first 3 maybe 4 cities (the last one I believe was Chicago) & he backed out of the tour. I was friends with Sammy & the next stop was Radio City Hall in NYC & got to see Frank & Sammy there the Liza, Frank & Sammy at the Meadow Lands in NJ not long after. it is my understanding that Dean was very upset still at this time with the death (plane crash I think) of his son not long before this. Sammy was telling Dean he understood why he couldn't go on preforming.

When given the option to get an operation in his throat to ease his cancer and prolong his life by a little, Sammy refused as it would have taken away his singing voice and made his voice feel weaker. The Immortal Sammy Davis Jr. Still Lives On!

I was very disheartened to learn that the telethon will be cut to only 6 hours. Even more disturbing was the fact that the press release on the MDA website had no comment from Jerry Lewis. In fact the press release didn't even mention him at all!
