Joey is so inspiring because he plays for the sheer joy of playing jazz. So many great jazz players exude a weird vibe like "I'm better than you are, listen to this lick!" Joey strips all that bullshit away and plays for the joy it brings in playing and having others enjoy what he does. As unpretentious and pure as it gets.

After a few weeks I haven't gotten over my amazement at this extreme and original talent. Nothing can explain the Joey phenomenon, but God's own hand. This is nothing short of miraculous. Blackbird is a very original and beautiful rendition of the Beatles classic. I'd want to live longer just to witness how this wondrous talent will grow to be. What more can I say !!!!

Joey is just one of those once in a lifetime geniuses. He is going to change the course of jazz the way Coltrane did, the way Bird did, and Satchmo before that, I don't think he's going to burn out like prodigies often do. He has all the makings of a major force in this music. A game changer.
@gordoloboalbondigas9 жыл бұрын
+Ray Cabarga I agree. One worries w/kids this young, suddenly pressed into so much exposure and sides of the nature of the business that do surely burn out most contenders early on, but there's something about this kid, an intrinsic solidity, and depth, almost unnatural, but there it is...

He's something i've never encountered before. Yet he really is in every other way just a little kid. I had him sign my CD after a concert in my home town and he wrote with slow shaky kid handwriting "To Ray Love Joey" so cute.

Joey's amazing humility is so lovely. The whole girlfriend Q &A is so cute, since he obviously has no idea what a girlfriend is...good...he's eleven! The story of how he taught himself be ear with one of those electronic toy keyboards and his parents records is jaw-dropping. His father is a very good bassist and he has had classical training, but he mostly taught himself, by ear. He's such an insightful player, for any age. I am a huge fan of him. He's one of my favorite musicians ever and I'm 59. All of his albums and many of his live recordings are available, free, on KZbin. Not too long ago, four full length CDs, a Christmas EP, and Four concert videos would have cost well over $100.00, now it's all free and disposable. It's now so easy to take such an incredible talent, not only for granted, but as an afterthought.
@elmyr4art5 жыл бұрын
Where from you find concert videos to buy !? Four CD-albums I bought just when I notice available. Why I bought all his albums just when I found them? Just cause I thought: what my heirs says unless my accounts have no bills of his cd's !?

actually this confuses me. I have always thought great jazz only comes out through life experiences and who you have been playing with in the bandstand...otherwise you cannot fake it, and it is no more than a technical exercise. i mean he is exceptionally young and yet sounds mature and surely will be the future of jazz. I can tell though he may have listened and connected very well with Monk's music. but he is no imitator, heas his own style, Of course it is great the parents nurtured him early on
