I randomly saw Joey in the late 90’s walking on the sidewalk in Pittsburgh. I said Joey what’s going on?!? First words out of his mouth was, “Do you know where I can get some fish?”. True story.

Will R Most punk stars are and were cool because they are real. I have had a chance to meet quite a few guys in the biz and most guys are who they are onstage and off. Only said hi to Joey a few times but one of my teen year aquatences, co- wrote and produced some of their later records. He also played guitar on Joey’s solo record.

Joey was always overly optimistic, believing in the slim chance that he would make it out. The band's longtime collaborator, the late Arturo Vega, recalled that even during Joey's final days, he refused being fed with tubes because he was afraid it would hurt his singing voice.

MrNorthernSol English punk was very diverse - Rotten may not have liked them, but the arrival of the first Ramones album was a huge influence on many bands, who were probably listening to the Stooges and MC5 also (and Patti Smith, and Television... and the Saints...) and for many it was just down to how fast they could learn not to sound awful so they could get out there and be part of their local scene... which was what made it exciting for all concerned.

@@-Vitalis-Joey was not 'cookie cutter' cute but in his way, he was beautiful. So many odds stacked against him from birth but he rose above and reached for his own personal star. In spite of his challenges, he became an icon, by many accounts he was kind, sweet and gentle by nature. He was quite shy but pushed himself. Shame that some still place more value on a persons looks over their soul and accomplishments.

So sad that he died shortly after this. But what a lovable guy. He surely brought happiness to so many people, including myself. To quote the old show Grounded For Life, “Son, the Ramones are more important than the solar system!”

In my 58 years and over 200 concerts as a fan I have very few regrets and the biggest regret is that I saw Ramones only once Road to Ruins tour March of 1980 Hollywood Paladium. The reason was that they played so often everywhere it was easy to put them on the back burner when planning very few nights with nothing planned after work and previous plans. I have heard they did over 3600 shows. I haven t confirmed this but they played a lot. I miss them and I love them then and now. One of the things on my tiny bucket list is to snap a selfie on the corner of 53rd and 3rd street in NYC perhaps I will see you there....peace

The whole "fight" thing between the Pistols and The Ramones was a publicity stunt by Malcom. Johnny doesn't "do violence" at all and it was just Malcom being a jerk. They actually were very impressed by the Ramones.

Johnny did in fact think the Ramones were a rough crowd, a gang even. I think it's written in Please Kill Me. The Ramones knew that and were kind of mad that the Pistols were giving punk this kind of nonsensical image. Joey mentions it in another interview.

@@ianjackson7916 That reflects how British bands were at the time, not the Ramones who were middle class and pretty well behaved. The Ramones were 'fun' in their own words and making music for teens...the Pistols were attempting something else entirely

New York back in the day, when you would run into Joey on the street, in front of Madison Square Garden right before a Black Sabbath concert, and burn a couple of joints with him, just like fans psyched for a show, shooting the shit, NY cool the rule. True story. He was a great guy, totally accessible, highly intelligent, funny as fuck and every bit the rock antihero. RIP, Joey.
