I agree to an extent, but Jokic certainly reminds me quite a lot of Larry Legend. And @Crown Larry/Magic came into the league in 1979-80 season, Jordan in '84, but Jordan didn't start winning until 1990. The 80's belonged to Larry and Magic who are one of the greatest rivalries not just in basketball but in sports.

Yes, the NBA had legends like Kareem Abdul Jabar and Dr. J (Michael Jordan's favorite growing up) as well as Wilt Chamberlain before them (not leaving out the other legends like Pistol Pete, John Havlicek, Elvin Hayes, Walt Frazier) , but Magic Johnson and Larry Bird boosted the ratings by making each other great - rivals since college and friends since a commercial shoot together for life. When everyone was snubbing Magic for having AIDS, Larry Bird was one of the few real friends who would check in on him and make sure he was doing ok.

For those that did not see Bird play, many have no idea how good Bird was and how impactful. Bird was the main reason Boston went from a 29 win team to a 61 win team when Bird was a rookie. Bird won ROY and finished 4th in MVP vote. For the next 8 years in the MVP vote Bird was 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd and then 2nd again. Bird created the 50-40-90 club, did it 2 years in a row = 87 and 88 and was so close in 85 and 86 that Bird actually averaged 50-40-90 shooting over those 4 years! Bird also led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5 in DWS. Bird was on 3 all defense teams (2nd team) and in 1983 finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award. Bird was the most complete player I have ever seen.

I've wondered if they listed it that way because Magic was 6'9", but when you see them standing next to each other Bird was clearly 1 or 2 inches taller. Every player who saw Bird in person said he's taller and bigger than they expected. He was legit power forward sized. It also seems even crazier someone within a couple of inches of 7' tall dove out of bounds over tables for loose balls like he did.

But you can see some highlights where he played Jordan. Sometimes Jordan would jump so damn high in the air to try and block his shot and yet somehow Larry would just arc it over him. The Larry vs Jordan games were great. Larry always won but Jordan put on some shows in those games. One game Jordan had 60 and Bird had like 30+ with a triple double. One of the games that is etched in my memory and really made me start liking Jordan.

Growing up just outside of Boston in the 80's was an amazing time to be alive. Spent a lot of nights at the Garden watching this team play. BTW, Birds retirement was on a nongame night, they filled that stadium just for him. You couldn't even get tickets, I tried.. And yes, while Magic and Bird were tough on each other in the game, they were good friends off the court. Bird called him after the HIV diagnosis at a time when there was a huge stigma around the disease. "He called me. We were talking, it's just, 'how you doin? Heard about it.' You can almost hear both of us with some tears in our eyes. And I'm choked up because he did call me. When something happens to you and then you find out who really your friends are and people who really care about you"- Magic Johnson

The "big steal" by Bird and feed to DJ was in game 7 (overtime) against the Pistons and it won the game. The game where Bird broke his cheekbone but came back out against the Pacers was the East championship series. So these heroics were both at critical times in the playoffs. Nice video!

Bird's steal was in game 5 and not in overtime. It made the difference between going back to Detroit for game 6 being up 3-2 instead of down 2-3. Detroit and Boston had split the season series 3-3 with the home team winning each game, and in fact the same situation occurred in the ECF. Detroit won game 6 at home and Boston won game 7 at home.

Beautiful thing about the big steal was how he baited that inbounds pass. He left a player unguarded and as soon as the ball was handed to the inbounds passer, he sprinted to intercept the pass. He played the game steps ahead of his competitors.

That was an awesome era for basketball. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird revitalized a flagging league at the time. So many even older players get overlooked. This video had Dr. J in it. He was almost paired with Pete Maravich in the 70s. That would've been an incredible duo! They both were precursors to today's more wide open, fast-paced NBA. Even Jabbar, Chamberlain, and Russell are often overlooked. Wilt Chamberlain averaged over 50 ppg one year, over 25 rebounds per game in another. He dropped 100 on the Knicks. He was the Babe Ruth of basketball. Russell led the great 60s Celtics teams to 11 Championships in 12 Finals appearances. Kareem Abdul Jabbar is the reason high school and College outlawed the dunk while he played! They outlawed a shot for one guy! He didn't complain, he just developed an even more devastating shot, the "sky hook." There were so many great players early on in basketball and football, that made those leagues what they've become...and they did it for relatively short money, compared to today. GREAT reaction video!

In the off season he would shoot 700 shots every day. When he hit 700, he would pause and say to himself, "Somewhere out there Magic is also shooting 700 shots today." So he would shoot another 100.

The greatest ever. More end of time, game winning shots than anyone. Dropped 47 on Portland left handed! When asked by reporters why he used only his left hand, he said, I'm saving my right hand for LA, we play them tomorrow night! Won 3 MVPs during the greatest era of players. 3 3 point contest in a row , one while wearing his warm up stuff! Played the last 6 years with a broken back and blown Achilles tendon! Because of his back, they took a stationary bike to all games. Larry had to ride it, 1-2 hours before each game, to loosen his back, up!! Was the first 50/40/90 guy. When playing the bulls in conference finals, swept them! As a rookie, on third day of camp, came out and told reporters, this league is nothing, I will dominate this league! Worthy said, he would rather guard Jordan than Bird! Made 2 shots on purpose from behind the backboard! Got the whole Atlanta bench in trouble, for his shooting display against them. When the rockets had the Twin Towers, they should have won 2 titles. Bird and the Celtics, stopped them! He's the goat. Maybe the only better player was pistol Pete, but he just burnt out too soon, plus born with a unusually small heart pump side. He once told an opposing player who has a good first half against him, " are ur parents here, cuz ur not gonna want them to see, what I'm about to do to you!" So Bird drops 27 on him in the second half, and also shut him down. He tells the guy after the game, " that was for ur mom!" Ice cold! He played during an era, when there was no hack a Shaq foul, no finger hand elbow or body check fouls. And when centers and power forwards would break ur bones and punish you, if you went inside! I think it was either Chuck Daily or Pat Riley who said, " u want a end of game shot, pick Jordan. U want a shot to save ur life, pick Bird!"

When I was young, back in the early 80s, I had a computer that was top of the line at that time, which means it wasn't as powerful as a standard basic no-features flip phone today, and the #1 basketball game for it was One On One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird. These were two of the biggest stars at the time, the elder statesman Julius Erving who was in his early 30s and the young gun Larry Bird who was in his late twenties. Because of the impact of those two, plus Magic, Kareem, and other legends of the era, the NBA became a wildly successful league. This game was hella fun for the day. I mean, you could shatter the glass backboard with a slam dunk, and then the janitor would come out and sweep up the glass. 😀 I broke more than one joystick playing this game. It made Electronic Arts into a wildly successful company too. They only updated it after Dr. J retired, but by then it was the start of the Jordan era so it became Jordan vs. Bird. I'd have loved a Magic vs. Bird version though.

"Red" seen a lot of players come & go through his years. For him to say Bird was the most motivated player he's ever seen should tell any youngster the caliber Larry was in.

You make that shot from behind the backboard with supernatural backspin and a lifetime of practice. In 1980 I was 13, the Magic and Larry thing made the next few years very enjoyable to me and probably saved the NBA

Accident caused his back problems. He played for years through his pain. Needed to retire so he didn’t wind up paralyzed.
