Great stuff, keep it up! Also, I just wanted to point out that with the Komodo you don't need to worry about black shading again after changing exposure. On DSMC2 cameras you would have to do this if you didn't black shade for all the exposure range. But on the Komodo, when you black shade it takes into account all the different exposures for that sensor temp. You'll notice this when the changing exposures the E may go yellow, then switch back to green. And as you mentioned the T/E (T=Temp and E=Exposure), watch these because if the T is green that means the temp changes haven't been significant enough to need a new black shade. Also, that blob you saw almost looks like you had some light leak when you black shaded. Most lens caps aren't dark enough to do a trustworthy black shade. I would recommend the body cap over a lens cap in most situations. And then even trying to cover it up with something else dark if outside on a sunny day. Finally, this is super important, black shade after your camera has warmed up (can speed this up by letting it record for several minutes). Hope this helps!
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Great, great call out! Gonna pin it for a bit so people read! Still learning 😉 @People - Please read it!
@Helivatefilmsaerial4 жыл бұрын
I need to make a correction to one thing. If you do make a significant enough change to exposure (+-1/2 sec) you will see the E go yellow, indicating a new calibration is suggested. But that is a pretty significant change as I've only seen the E go yellow when really cranking the shutter speed. Which ideally you don't want to do anyways to keep a natural motion blur.

Is the black shading going to be more efficient once it is no longer in Beta? I would find this super annoying if I constantly had to black shade.

Agreed also. SO glad I stumbled onto his videos! Someone does needs to do a real series about accurate color correction vs. color grading - someone who's been around since before the time when people started using still cameras to make movies, so that it's someone who actually understands RYB gains, why they are what they are, and how to actually calibrate color to an accurate, measurable representation prior to "grading." :) I'm not sure any accurate tutorials exist on the subject. Kind of like timecode - no one outside older filmmakers and tv studio engineers really understands it anymore well enough to explain it, much less teach how to use it. In fact, most don't even believe it's valuable. People spend $300 apiece on little devices to feed timecode into cameras without ever understanding what to do with it later, and even post in production companies producing shows for network tv just ignore the embedded tc and use plural eyes, smh.
@Joey_Helms3 жыл бұрын

Definitely not the fastest cam so you would have to keep it running. Black shading is not required every time you boot it up. Only if temps swing. I shot with it in Iceland and it is certainly built for planned shoots but if you challenge yourself you can run and gun with it like I do.

You know that adjustment layers stack on top of each other, right? So the bottom one is what happens first, then the next one on top affects whatever you've done below and so on so forth. So if your Rec.709 conversion LUT is on top, the other stuff is happening before you are doing the conversion.
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Yup that's correct! I guess I wasn't clear enough 😂 nonetheless the rec709 has to happen last and hence be in the top layer.
@geirisk84 жыл бұрын
@@Joey_Helms Hmm I would beg to differ. This is like using LOG footage where you want to convert it to Rec.709 and then work on the clip after you've put it into the correct colour space. That's how I look at it. With that said, I've never used a RED camera or worked with RED footage!

My friend/mentor highly recomended me to get this camera instead, but I am a little hesitant because RED scare me a little. I have barely worked a little with 4k clips and always had a monitor and "run and gun" setup. the Black Magic 6k pocket is 2399 dollars in my country, the RED (with grips, cards, cables and no batteries/monitor) komodo is 9000 dollars. I feel like I need the stepping stone of learning the black magic first, but my friend tries to convince me I will get over the fear and "new" workflow fast, and it will pay off way more. Top tier work on the video! I have one question though. Why are there missing frames throughout the video. Does it mean the camera is a bit faulty or is this a render issue? See 15:48 and 15:50 for example.

Thanks! That was a rendering issue on my workstation's side. Not enough power to handle R3Ds and animations. Issues have reduced since I found ways around it.

Great video! I'm trying to decide which camera I want. I'm looking between the ZCAM E2-F6, Canon C70, and the Red Komodo.

Zcam and komodo is more towards short film and shoots where you have more time to set up whereas c70 is more of a swiss army knife for gun and gun, events and quick workflow. You have to decide which category is more important to you.

I feel like upgrading to cine stuff just got more accessible and the body on this thing means i can still take it on tour. if i ever go back on tour that is. i was debating the black magic pocket, but this white komodo omfg. i also have zero experience with red stuff we used black magic at ralph lauren.

I dont think the ISO effects exposure at all. Its more like a lut. It changes the histogram but the actual footage is shot at the same exposure. Much different than say a dslr which changes the sensors sensitivity to light. You can see this if you move iso it dosent change the traffic lights even a little bit.
@Joey_Helms2 жыл бұрын
Yep absolutely correct, I reckon it wasn’t clearly communicated in this video.

Fantastic video dude! I’ve been watching all your stuff to get more information about buying one. I did notice something in this video that I’ve noticed in others which is a weird colour/graphic glitch. 15:48 and 15:51 are the timestamps that I see it at. Is that an issues upon exporting?

hey, thanks for the video. I have a doubt, with full frame lenses there is a recording mode that does not suffer from the s35 crop. record in 4k?
@Joey_Helms3 жыл бұрын
Full frame lenses work no problem on S35. If you want to avoid the 4K crop you get, you will have to shoot in ProRes in order to get the sensor open gate.

Hi and thanks for this awesome video about Kodomo. I am relatively new to cinema cameras but have watched all of your Komodo videos. I am curious how do shoot is this aspect ratio? (anamorphic like) Do you shoot in 6k with a guide on your monitor to frame shots and then crop the top and the bottom in post? Thanks in advance for your help!
@Joey_Helms4 жыл бұрын
Hey Igor, thanks a lot and happy to hear you like the videos. So when you see the wider aspect ratio in these videos it is actually because I shot them natively at 17:9 to get more record time. Since I like this aspect ratio in certain situations anyways, saving some memory space has a nice benefit. A few shots in this video were actually shot anamorphic on full sensor readout so I had to desqueeze them in post giving you that wider aspect ratio. In some cases I put letterboxes on to create that effect. Hope this helps.
@IgorShevchenkoUSA4 жыл бұрын
@@Joey_Helms thanks a lot! Yep, I was curious if you shot the b-roll and other non-talking footage using anamorphic or just cropping/adding bars. What anamorphic lens did you use ? And the color grading is so good, curious about the LUT as well ;)
