I actually went to Shimoga from Kollur. After visiting jog falls from shimoga, I returned to Bangalore in train from Shimoga. You can travel in 2 ways: 1. Getting a train from Mysore or Bangalore and getting down at Talguppa. From Talguppa, you can catch a bus to Jog falls just outside the railway station. Jog falls is situated at 20 kms from Talguppa. This will be easier but you don't have much of food and stay options at Talguppa. So if you need a good stay option after visiting Jog falls you have to return to Shimoga. If you take this way train fare will cost 145 rs and bus fare will be 20-30 rupees. There is a morning train and you will reach Talguppa at 1.15 and you will be reaching Jog falls at 2.30. After a while if you decide not stay in Shimoga and just travel back like a one day trip, there is a overnight night train to Bangalore from Talguppa at 9.00 pm. The sleeper ticket costs around 240. So excluding food you can go a one day trip to Jog falls and return back at just 450 - 500 Rs. 2. Bangalore to Shimoga in Train, checkin a hotel in Shimoga and then travel to jog falls in Bus from Shimoga. This was my option. For me it costed around 2500 Rs including food. I stayed at a hotel for 1500 Rs (one day cost). The bus experience was good since I got the bus at Shimoga, I got a seat. After a while it got crowded at Sagara. Even if you don't get a direct bus you can take a bus to Sagara from Shimoga and from there you can take another bus to Jog falls.
