Michael Haydn composed Grauale(s) on August 26, 1787 ("Universi, qui te exspectant); August 29, 1787 ("Ex Sion speies"); September 1, 1787 ("Qui sedes, Domine"), September 5, 1787 ("Prope est Dominus"); September 9, 1787("Adjutor in opportunitatibus"); September 14, 1787 ("Sciant gentes"); September 20, 1787 ("Tu es Deus"). Perhaps someone with more knowledge of Michael Haydn and his church music history can explain why this many in such a short span. All these were original scored for voices, 2 horns, 2 Violins and organ.

Michael Haydn was mainly active as a church composer in Salzburg so it was not really a big deal for him to write this kind of short sacred pieces. In fact, almost whole of them you mentioned follows the same pattern on structure and style terms. Plus, he wrote hundreds of small church works. He was one the finest sacred music composer in the 18th Century.

Thank you. I enjoy Michael Haydn's music, but my knowledge of his life is a bit underwhelming. Mozart is my main interest, so obviously Michael Haydn falls in his circle on occasion.

Mozart really admired Michael Haydn. Actually, he was greatly influenced by him. Haydn's Requiem is a proper example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZeYfK1trLuYrq8
