Joseph Haydn’s younger brother Michael ‘also had the gift of melodic invention’ apparently in spades to judge from what delightful music he left behind-unfortunately (perhaps as a result of being stifl’d in a Fail’d Marriage in provincial Salzburg under the autocratic Prince Archbishop Colloredo that irritated W.A. Mozart to extremes at times) Michael turn’d to the wine bottle more & more so that by 1783 Mozart was the one (visiting his father in Salzburg with his new wife) who had to compleat a set of duos begun but left unfinish’d by Michael Haydn ‘due to alcoholic poisoning’ - the ‘rum punch’ recipe us’d by Michael Haydn was over 85-proof -the same recipe us’d by the US Founding Fathers & good ole Captain Bligh aboard the Bounty - it’s a wonder men imbibing such high-alcohol drinks could stand up afterwards-and I’m quite sure many of them couldn’t !! LoL

I know the contents of paintings often have meanings beyond mere portraiture. I wonder, Miss Blackett's dress seems a bit of a joke. Normal down to the waist but then it becomes this huge gob of cloth. Could Maria Verelst be making a joke about the aristocracy? A little poke at the pomposity of it all?
