That was common back in the 1950s and 1960s with big roadshow theatrical engagements, where there was an overture, an intermission, and exit music, which would play as the audience exited the theater auditorium. Here the exit music played over the end credits, then kept playing as you (the audience) would presumably be exiting the theater. That's why it keeps playing after the credits themselves finish.

SchoolofSoul The funny thing is, whenever I see "2001" in a theater, well over half the audience doesn't leave until the climax of the "Blue Danube". Such is the power of Kubrick.

My father took me to see 2001: A Space Odyssey when it came out. Mind you, I was 6 years old, but it instilled in me an appreciation for so many things - interesting film, broad horizons, and timeless music! Even at this tender age, I loved The Blue Danube.

That music was inspired by the writing of Nietzsche. His book was titled ALSO SPOKE ZARATHRUSTRA, which Wagner used as the title of his musical piece. It deals with what Nietzsche said what our human choice. We could continue to be men who are little more than animals, or we could rise above our petty world and become 'supermen' - smart, creative and great. Man and Superman.

Alex North, a film composer, had written a score for this movie after being hired by Kubrick. He was stunned when he attended the opening of 2001 and discovered Kubrick had not used any of his compositions. After listening to the music he wrote, I think Kubrick was right to use the classical works.

I was 14 years of age when I went to see 2001. When I saw the paintings by Robert Mcall, I said to myself, the ships looked a little unconventional. Yet I went in and watch it anyway. The very first time was enough to get me hooked: I watched it 23 times on the big screen, bought the tape, and recorded it. All of this of course covering decades of time.To this day, for me, its a timeless classic.
