It's a real luxury to live in a nice, happy home, in a small Indian village, in the middle of peaceful nature during these Coronavirus times. Our house is in the middle of a "jungle" and we are surrounded by animals and insects of all kinds. Since we are locked in at our house I have found the time to become a perfect Indian housewife - cooking and cleaning all day long. I do miss our families in Jaipur, Haryana and Finland a lot, but I don't really miss travelling or even going to the town very much now. Our normal home life here in the Kerala jungle and monsoon is the happiest adventure every day this year!
Here's some of my favourite moments from the past couple of weeks! Enjoy and #stayhome !

Yes I wonder too why restaurants dont serve all the green veggies we find in India. Ridge gourd is my favourite too. I love how it softens and blends in the curry. I love snake gourd , Chow Chow, green lobia n plenty more. Honestly, here in North India especially in Delhi people consume matar, bhindi, carrot, potato, karela, lauki n bit of other stuffs. That's it. I miss all the veggies here.

Oh i would love to eat the local veggies in the restaurant. Anything but aloo and paneer! It's easier to find veggies in the restaurants here in kerala, but I have a very hard time travelling in north india because of this. idk why they focus os much on paneer and aloo dishes. Even in veg thali meals, I am disappointed by the absence of vegetables! 😫 I think I'll make a video in the future about what made us move to Kannur. Thanks for the suggestion! Couple of things are interesting. 1. Jackals listen to Vinod, means they are familiar to him. 2. Insects as Vinod see them, are not dangerous, as long as we don't see them as enemies. Let them live, but keep population in control. 3. The colour display in the evening is spectacular, but not as a fascinating as northern lights. 4. We have a variety of vegetables in South India. You can prepare a variety of dishes. And don't miss fish items if Vinod has dislike for it. Also if you develop a taste for coconut in dishes you will start liking it and bring more variety for taste buds. Have a great time. Your narration is interesting to listen to, when I compare the same that of Carolina Goswami.

I have nothing against paneer and potato! I make paneer myself and love palak paneer+methi chaman! And (aloo) masala dosa is my favourite and I add some aloo to many veg dishes at home - I prefer sweet potato tastewise though :) The issue just is that these aren't vegetables and it's ridiculous they're pretty much the only options on veg menus in North Indian restaurants :/ I don't like having a meal without vegetables. And unless I'm in the mountains/trekking etc. having just aloo on the side of my rice dal is too much! In Finland we use potato in the same way as rice and rotis.

Johanna, for the jackals, may I suggest a method. 1) solar powered motion sensor led lights. This gets charged in the day time and turns on at night when movement is sensed with 1 meter proximity. Assuming you know where the jackals exactly stand post and make this sound , maybe just maybe it might scare them away. Its cheap and available on amazon.

My dear Joanna...your husband is correct when he says that these insects and arachnids have a place called home in Kerala. They have a right to a life too. As long as you do not disturb them or provoke them they will not provoke you. You could do a bit of spring cleaning yourself once in a while if you see that there are cobwebs etc. Basically spiders are the natural predators for insects like mosquitoes that cause diseases like dengue and malaria and zika..etc. Frogs too feed on insects. So they do not really harm you in any way

I think there is a easy solution for your fox/jackal howls ... go to a pet store and get a dog training device called "bark control" .. what it does is it emits low frequency noise that is inaudible to human ears, but creates un-comfortability on the dog's ears, so much so that it stops barking right away. I think if it works on dogs, it should be working on jackals too ..

Be happy, and they won't really do anything bad to you, if they aren't the poisenous kind, which the ones I can see so far in your house are not. I think most of kerala people dont use pumpkin for curry but use it fr makin 'pumkin rice payasam' In kerala ash melon use for curry nd "pachadi" Most keralites don't like potatoes so use rarely We make " Upperi" with Bitter guard Is that ok fr asking ur stayin place ,if u dont want to share it ,thats ok too

My Home is in a place exactly similar to this in the midst of vast green trees and plants, but further south Between Kottayam and Idukki. I miss all these moments since i am currently in Germany. Do you have a light outside house? May be setting a light outside could keep the jackals away. Also ask responsible person to keep the wild bushes in immediate surroundings cut short. If you use a bright torch light may be will get them on camera. Regarding vegetables, we cook all kinds of these vegetables at home. But we don't have a dish with them in restaurants except Sambar (which has almost all vegetables) or Avial. I am also thinking why is it so? May be because in Kerala most people are non veg (and they love beef) unlike other states in India.

When your husband said Shhhhh and those jackals actually shut up for a few seconds, I really cracked up!! 😂🤣 BTW, of those gourds, bitter gourd is my favorite. But generally we find dishes cooked with gourds too homely for restaurant cooking. I guess that's why they don't offer them in restaurants.... hardly anyone would order a lauki - bottle gourd dish at a restaurant!! 😁
@JohannaNorth
@JohannaNorth 4 жыл бұрын
haha yes, the jackals somehow understand his shhh and not mine 😂. And yes, I guess what you said about the gourds is true. But I think it's high time the restaurants started experimenting with these veggies too. I would definitely love seeing these on the menu!

@ johanna we would like to see your husband and his jackals in action... Buy a good powerful torch ASAP. Btw a good torch is essential where you live esp if there is power cuts during monsoon nights and you have to get down to go somewhere..
@JohannaNorth
@JohannaNorth 4 жыл бұрын
haha yes that sounds like a good idea. We'll buy a good torch the next time we go to the town. So far we've been using only candles during power cuts, but with these animals and insects around i think torch is a must. And a hunting knife too, perhaps :p

Rewatching some or your older videos. I remember my son catching a big spider and when he threw it outside we heard it land on the grass 😱🕷😱 I'm terrified like you. Once I tried to hoover one up and I chased it across the living room. 🕷🧹🧻😅 There was no emoji for hoover so went with smacking the spider over the head with the brush and picking it up with the tissue and squashing it in my hand just to make sure 🤪😂😂😂

AHAHAHAHAHA :D That's hilarious! I'm actually even more terrified of bees (allergies). Whenever there's been a bee inside my home in Finland, I run to the bathroom and lock the door, because I'm so scared :D Thank goodness there aren't many bees where we live!

Your beloved husband is right about the utilities provided by the spiders and the lizards. The jumbo spiders aren’t good. Do you know we all eat a few small spiders every now and then while we sleep with our mouths open? That place is very pretty. What city is that in Kerala? Please keep your cool. You will be fine living with all the resident animals.

I agree with your point that most of restaurants only have dishes of paneer and potatoes in veg. Have you ever eat dry fried chilli bitter gourd ?really it is very tasty.you should try it . You will like it

I don't think I've had chili karela, but in Odisha I had this amazing crispy dry fried karela dish, which I've tried to make at home but don't know how to!! Epic fail every time, it doesn't get crispy at all because I don't want to use too much oil 😂😂

In India if you are going to a restaurant its usually an occasion so people want the tastiest food. Lauki and Torai aren't really considered very tasty in Indian cuisine even though we eat them a lot in daily cuisine. Paneer is costly and not prepared that often at homes. So vegetarian people like to eat that when going out.
@JohannaNorth

Very true! But it makes travelling in north india so difficult for me - i cant keep eating those paneer and oily aloo dishes all the time :( I wish they start having proper veggies too - I'm sure even local people will appreciate that!

New to your channel. Your love story suddenly appeared in my suggestions yesterday. Loved it haha ! Also I couldn't stop laughing when you said "I might have to kill you if I don't get my ice cream" in another vlog ! And congratulations on your pregnancy !! Btw you are wasting the ridge gourt. We cook it with the skin on. Just wash it well and cut pieces. It's one of my absolute favorites too. And my mom would mix coconut shreds with the Puttu mixture and then fill in that long vessels. And then you could eat it with freshly made coconut milk and sugar and maybe spicy sambal or fish curry. It's amazing that way. I'm a Sri Lankan btw. Keep smiling sweetie. Stay safe both of you 💕🌻🌴✨

I guess it is because gourds are staple food in north and nobody would want to go to a restaurant and eat the same kind of food again on the other hand paneer is expensive and not usually eaten on an everyday basis so thats why it is so common to find it in the restaurants.
