It seems like during his time, he was underappreciated by the record-buying public, as the Karajan-Bernstein blitz was in full force...now that we have these jewels on sites like KZbin and Spotify, I think people are realizing how much they might have missed...

I find it amazing how a conductor can communicate with the orchestra with the slightest of facial movements. Watching Gunter Wands face is the perfect example of this. The slightest raising of an eyebrow, a hint of a smile, and a commanding stare like your mother used to give you and you knew exactly what she meant. What a joy it must have been to be part of this magnificent performance.

The fine performance is the tip of the iceberg - what lies underneath is the many hours of meticulous rehearsal (something Wand was noted for) which means that players and conductor are at one in their interpretation, everything is beautifully balanced and the detail is brought out. Even in this piece that I have known well from childhood, some of the phrasing brought unique insights.

The musical ideas are front and center, and clearly presented. Where others plow ahead, Maestro Wand holds back, and then unleashes the energy to much greater effect. Each transition is executed with purpose, to greater effect than most others. A well above average performance of this important work.

The Wonderful Wand. R.I.P..
@javiermarting9 ай бұрын
This is a fantastic performance. Wand's features are here: fidelity to the score, respect metronomic indications, atention to detail while preserving the overall architecture, musicality over anything else, no excesses, long rehearsals to reach to what he has in mind, etc. On the other hand, as expected with those parameters as main dirvers, it lacks spontaneity, creativity (overall it sounds as if already heard before), freshness, even some of the excitement of a live performance, etc. At the end you have to choose between both worlds, either follow the score or interpret the score. On the anitpodes of this you have Furtwängler, the master of subjectivism. Both things are perfectly valid, you may enjoy both.

🤍 Many thanks for posting this!
