You've achieved a perfect duplication of the tone of Pete 'The Great'.Those P-90s definately produce that "growl"..the slim mahogany SG body coupled with the amazing Hiwatt clear tone...that's definately it. I just wish he'd go back to that same exact gear he used back then which was his trademark tone (Woodstock, Isle of Wight, Leeds, etc.). It's not that he sounds terrible on a Stratocaster through Fender amps. He just sounds GREAT playing Gibsons plugged into Hiwatts...

@@harrykadaras9459 I feel the same. Pete without an SG Special plugged into CP103 and DR103W custom built. Now I believe Fender is certainly contributing to Pete's retirement fund. I hesitated to get my own, but it is too expensive for just a whim.

That SG is all about the toggle switch. Pete used it to go from clean to dirty, keeping the volume down in the neck and up on the bridge to overdrive the amp. Very few guys were as adept at it as Pete was.
@67Stu3 жыл бұрын
@David Matsson Contrary to popular misinformation, that's not quite true. His amps don't have more gain than a standard DR amp; there are also no presence or middle controls. The amp also has four ECC83s in the preamp section and one ECC81 in the phase inverter section. The amp actually has a much cleaner signal path than the DR amps; it's also smoother sounding than the DR amps. The bass has to really be kept down on these amps, otherwise it can get too muddy or overdriven too easily; you would almost never want to have the bass up full; the treble works best when it's at least half way up, and is quite clear and bright. Using The Who amp for bass gives a very clear, bright, punchy sound. With guitar or bass, the overdrive is determined by the amount of guitar signal sent to it. This design is actually more like the original Dave Reeves circuit used with the Sound City amps he made for Arbiter, not the DR or Fender Tweed Bassman (copied by Marshall) layout with middle and presence added.
@67Stu3 жыл бұрын
Pete can actually be seen using the volume control on BOTH pickups, albeit primarily using the bridge pickup. The true key to what he does, is a combination of the guitar's volume knob(s) and the master volume knob on the Hiwatt. With the fuzz box kicked in, the the volume knob on the guitar influences the amount of sustain and fuzz in the signal chain. Even before and after using SGs, the guitar's volume knobs were/are everything to Pete.

One thing about Townshend: he ran all THREE Hiwatt heads maxed out and controlled the volume on his guitar (didn't matter which brand). But his Studio sound was not the same as live. Especially in the 70's. He used a Fender amp, a Gretsch guitar, a volume pedal and a Whirlwind cable, gifted to Pete by Joe Walsh (The James Gang, Barnstorm, solo, Eagles).
@RocknJazzer4 жыл бұрын
He usually only used one of the three, the other 2 were most often backups, and the bottom cabs empty dummys

I have a bit of a inside scoop on this, I received a very nice letter from Alan Rogan, back in 1983, regarding Pete's Les Pauls and Hiwatt 100 watt amps. The amps were made back in the late 60's for Pete, with four separate channels and no mid controls. Two were used on stage with a third as a back up, one amp powered two cabinets, one with 4 X JBL K120's and the other with 4 X Fane 12". His main effect was a MXR DynaComp but Alan stated that Pete had started using a Roland 2000 DDL. His studio amps then were either Mesa Boogie combo with 2 X12" or a Hiwatt head and two Mesa Boogie cabinets with 4 X EVM 12". We are talking early 80's here, his amps tended to remain the same and he changed guitars to vary his sound, except with his Les Pauls, which he changed because they were too heavy and hard on his back..
@RocknJazzer4 жыл бұрын
@@stevestewart-sturges2159 Thanks for the info, yeah I think I read that too for the early 80s era. I was talking more the earlier 70s era. Regardless how many head he chose to actually run any given night depended on room/venue size. Regardless even one of these amps is very loud...I have owned several old 100w Hiwatts including the Pete model. Using a second or third head doesnt really add much more, as watts do not have a linear relationship to volume, another amp or two are only 25% to 50% louder than just one, so one is the bulk of the level one hears, a few more only add a hair more, not double or triple as loud, only numerically in watts which again is not same as volume

Awesome! Pete Townshend is a magnificent player who uses dynamics and interplay to the greatest effect. Drowning up listening to them, day in and day out, I still never "got it" until I saw film of them.. then... BAM! Holy cow, he's an entire rhythm section, holding it down while Entwistle and Moon solo. And what a sound they made. If you haven't seen it recently, watch the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus. I don't hear that association at all. At least not with the Live at Leeds sound. A LOT of that tone comes from the speaker cab - unusual, very high wattage Alnico speakers that are very warm, very loud and stiff until breakup where they have that characteristic "agile" alnico essence. The typical ceramic speaker we are used to sounds broader and more ham-fisted, so it's hard to conceptualize until you hear the difference. A Hiwatt is also very bright and detailed, so the cab is a perfect compliment

If you want to hear its "sound" you really need to crank it to pretty insane levels. This can be very hard in a small practice room without losing your hearing. I played it (then) with a 60s Telecaster and it was sounding good once you managed to get get used to the level of it. Sounds great Johan. Absolutely love old Hiwatt amps. Looks like your running the amp at 8 ohms into a 16ohm cab. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

Hi, I was thinking that a video comparing a long tenon and a short tenon neck Les Paul would be a good idea. Thank you for reading and cheers from France :D
@JohanSegeborn5 жыл бұрын
If could keep everything but the tenon constant that would indeed be an interesting comparison. Cheers

Pretty bang on the money, only thing is the amp needs to be pushed all the way to the edge, then all the tone was in the volume knobs for his pickups.

This video came up on notifications and it was a "MUST SEE!!" for me. Johan do you know what Pete used for a boost pedal? I've seen many vids where he stomps on one, the only pedal he had on stage at the time? This sounds fucking amazing btw!!!

Very cool, thanks! I once had that Hiwatt catalog which included the 400 watt head (which is missing in this version, but it's in the price list). I presume the prices are $USD since the catalog is from New York. Really, really expensive back then!!!

starting at 3:24 for a couple minutes very much reproduces his sound. His strumming conjures up a deep bass frequency that starts to carry through the entire chord progression - for example I can see for miles really reveals that humm. so does Go to the mirror on Tommy. To me it sounds like a British bomber cruising overhead during WW2

Great job on the tones, but what happened to that SG?! Never seen one with the tailpiece moved up like that. I would think the drastically shorter scale length would make a huge tone difference. The tailpiece IS the bridge?
@montag45163 жыл бұрын
Yep, a wraparound bridge. Quite common on many older Gibson SG's and L.P. Junior's. And surely they still put out some guitars utilizing it today. If they are placed and installed correctly they can have a great feeling and affect on the instrument.
@michaelwoods90053 жыл бұрын
Looks like the brass plate behind the wraparound bridge is just to cover the holes left by the original vibrola tailpiece.

Hello Johan. I have seen that some guitarists uses these amplifiers with WEM cabinets. Is there a lot of sound difference between the original cabinet and the WEM?
@JohanSegeborn5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I haven’t tried the WEM Starfinder 200 4x12 that for instance David Gilmour used but they have Fanes like the Hiwatt cab. Not sure if it’s the same model. The cabinet itself has quite a big influence on tone though. Cheers
@michaelwoods90053 жыл бұрын
The WEM super starfinder cabs were essentially PA cabinets. They used Fane Crescendo speakers with aluminum dustcaps, very clean and neutral sounding.
