Today ICC Digital brings you a greeting and mini concert from two sublime Irish traditional musicians, father and son duo, John and James Carty. Both are well known to the ICC and have played many concerts as a duo and with other top Irish musicians.
Today, all the way from their home in County Roscommon, they will play you some awesome, uplifting jigs, reels and beautiful tunes…
James Carty (son of John), is one of the finest exponents of Sligo fiddle music and one of the leading players of his generation. James is fast cutting his own path in the traditional music scene with his own distinctive style of fiddle playing, which he developed having grown up listening to the recordings of the old Sligo masters Michael Coleman, James Morrison, Paddy Killoran.
As a solo musician, James has performed in Ireland, the UK, Canada and the USA. He recently completed his first solo album ‘Hiding Daylight in Dark Corners’ and he is currently busy recording his next album.
John Carty, is one of Ireland’s most highly regarded musicians. A world class fiddle player, he learned to play music from top Irish music tutor Brendan Mulkere. Also a superb banjo and guitar player, he has played with the greats in Irish music and produced many acclaimed albums including the banjo album “The Cat That Ate The Candle", the fiddle album “Last Night's Fun" followed by many more.
John was a member of the Irish trad band ‘At The Racket’ and he’s currently a member of the Irish super-group ‘Patricks’ Street’. He has toured the world with his music, winning many awards and in 2003 John won the prestigious ‘TG4's Traditional Musician of the Year’ Award.

May I ask what makes his playing unique to the other traditional fiddlers? In my recent deep dive into Trad music, it seems to me that no two fiddlers grew up in the same house.
