It's sad, Sarah didn't want to ever get pregnant, but John's fiance did. So his fiance got him to go through with their wedding, because he wanted to be a father. He could never leave her for Sarah in the future, not without losing his child. His ultra rich and powerful father in law would have made mincemeat out of John if he had deserted his wife for Sarah. And Sarah didn't seem too broken up when he decided to marry someone else. She had her own detective agency after all, and that seemed to mean more to her than he did.
