From 3:53 to 4:30 was so telling. I have a book that places Horenstein w Barbirolli at the same time and place re Mahler. It's the same book that quotes a critique that places fig. 56 of the finale of the last movement of Mahler's 1st w Horenstein in 1969 with the LSO as the TRUE climax of the piece... what sold me to Mahler as my favourite composer FOR LIFE. I generally prefer Horenstein for Mahler but Barbirolli for Sibelius. Thanks for posting, Misha!

Thank you Paolo, I presume the critic in that book is Lewis Smoley, right?

So Barbirolli didn't conduct Mahler in NY??? Mahler himself conducted the Philharmonic, Bernstein, and of COURSE Walter. Im not sure about Mengelberg but Mengelberg sure did Mahler in Amsterdam.

The New York Philharmonic published concert recordings of the Mahler symphonies including two (1 and 9) conducted by Barbirolli.
