Rose tinted glasses. What a silly comment. Barnes was aweful for England. He scored a couple of goals, but REGULARLY got a rating of 4 out of 10 in the match reports! He was always trying to dribble his way past everyone and kept getting caught because he tried to always go that one man extra, and would end up LOOSING the ball. His shooting was off target most of the times. He has a few decent games or moments in a game and you say he is one of England's best ever players?? Lay of the drugs. He was nowhere near as good as Charlton, Robson, Gazza, etc.

4-4-2 was really such a limiting formation. Barnes in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 as we have nowadays would have been amazing. Very good player indeed, but people like him and Hoddle were limited in the formations and tactics of the time, especially with England.

Yep, the 1990 squad was designed for the 4/2/3/1..but Barnes and Waddle needed to be played as inverted forwards, closer to midfield and able to interlink with Robson and Lineker up front .

How Bobby Robson used John Barnes and Chris Waddle was wrong...he should have pushed them infield much more to have better contact with the main striker (Lineker) and drift out when needed for width..This would have given them 50% better cutting edge up front..Gascoigne would have been irrelevant..having said that Bryan Robson being injured in 1990 was a massive blow, the anchor man...

He was not the most skillfull. Go and get your eyes tested. Paul Gascoigne was our most skillful player. Every England player states it! Barnes goal against Brazil he does not even dribble it really. He does one feint to the right to pass his man.. then runs in a straight line and no one from Brazil makes a tackle on him. They just stand there. Very bad defending So it's hardly a world class goal.

@chrisliddiard7254 жыл бұрын
yeah, back then a player was judged according how much running he did in training. Barnes was never a runner of marthons, he was a finess player and should have been coached accordingly. The Enland manager at the time talked of how he wanted Barnes to play like he did for his club, yet he was never coache like he did at his club. As soon an England manager gets a squad together then first thing he thinks of is getting them 'fit', as if they weren't already for their club. The result is a team who always seems to leave their best playing on the training pitch. Hopefully we've learned a bit more since.

If Barnes had been playing against Argentina from the start in the 86 World Cup final I think England would have won that game!!. He frightened the life out of the Argentinians!!
How times have changed. Now England fans throw plastic cups at their own players and boo them. Back then they’d throw bananas and boo them. So much progress.

It seems to be a recurring theme with English managers and their inability to build teams and tactics around their best players. Argentina did it with Maradona and Messi, Brazil did it with Ronaldo, but we stifle our greatest talents by crowbarring them into rigid systems that snuffs out their creativity and impact. It’s criminal really.

Wonderful goal against Brazil even though a minority of the England fans refused to acknowledge the goal purely because it was scored by Barnes
@craiggibbons822810 ай бұрын
No. The refused to acknowledge it because its NOT THAT GOOD. He cuts in and runs in a straight line. Then he dips to the right to go past 1 man, that's fine.... Everyone in football does that..... Then however the rest of the move is just him running in a straight line were not one player puts in a tackle and simply stands there and let's him go past them, dink left and then shoot. Hardly great when the defence refuses to put in a tackle. Incidently that was one of the worst performing Brazil sides of the era.
