Mr. Barry left us with some of the greatest orchestral works of the 20th Century. For me, this is the greatest of those great works. Much more complex then it seems and with daring rhythms and time changes, this work can only be produced by the very finest musicians. I salute this marvelous orchestra and their wonderful rendition of this majestic piece. Thank you for posting.

The film 'Dances with Wolves' is a permanent monument to Lakota elder and teacher Doris Leader Charge, who was the main adviser on the filmset. Her knowledge, wisdom and leadership guided the production team and was one of the contributing factors that produced this classic masterpiece. A piece of Doris Leader Charge will be with us forever.

She was a smart, caring, wonderful woman! I was always told since childhood, I was part Lakota. I had a few friends that were also part Lakota that I spoke with online quite often. One, was a woman named Spirit Eagle. She became and still is a good friend. Then, I did that Ancestry DNA thing, and was crushed to learn I was only 1% Native American! (It didn't even specify what tribe) I told Spirit Eagle how sad I was to find out this news. A few days later, we talked and she told me she had gone to an Elder she knew, and told him of my broken heart. She told me his reply was this, "It's not the amount of Lakota blood in your veins, but more important is the amount of Lakota spirit in your heart." I never got to meet this man, but his words lifted me up, and I will never forget them.

The buffalo hunt in Dances w Wolves was one of the greatest scenes in motion picture history that I can ever recall. Most Americans don't realize it but there were millions of buffalo roaming the plains prior to the arrival of the Europeans. Some years ago I drove into Arizona through New Mexico, and I was looking for the Navajo County offices. I was misdirected by a woman at the AZ Tourism Station off I-40. I filled up the fuel tank, had drinking water, and other supplies. Then just before turning south on the road that was to take me to my destination, there was a sign posted, warning that there were no road services, patrol, fuel stations, or food vendors for the next 57 miles. The final message was: "Enter at Your Own Risk". One lane in each direction for the entire length of 57 miles of desert. Every now and then, there were mailboxes with family names posted near the road, but when one looked for a house or a building, or activity of some sort, none were to be seen. Finally, almost an hour later, I arrived at the town of Saint Johns. I could not find the Navajo County Offices, so I stopped at the only gasoline station in town. The attendant told me the county offices there were for Apache County. I asked him if I had to drive back the 57 miles to I-40, and he directed me to a "shortcut". He told me there was another road, but that it was closed certain days of the week. In fact, there were Native Americans posted at the closed off entrance to the aforementioned road. They were wearing beige, police type uniforms, no badges or insignia, no patrol car, mirror sunglasses, and cowboy hats. They signaled to me to stop and turn around without saying anything. By instinct, I found the correct road to Holbrook, with a sign announcing the direction to it just before coming to the end of that road. I was trying to understand the logic of building a road, only to have it closed for at least half of the week. It wasn't until much later that I understood that I had driven through one of the reservations that straddle Arizona and New Mexico.

If there ever was a song that best describes music, Dances With Wolves, it is this song; to include the melody, harmony, key, metre and rhythm. Each element is speaking loudly, then softly, fast then slow, to the others in a way that draws one into its arms, causing one's emotions to a blissful state. The pitches of highs and lows in this music are organised in such a way that is perfect for the ears, the heart and soul of the listeners. A beautiful and wonderful piece of music, that complements each element in its arrangement. Though cannot see John Barry in the movie, he is there through his arrangements every second of this wonderful movie and through all his arrangements within as well.

Fantastic percussion: the drums of war, straight from the battlefield into the music hall. A gift to the Classical Music by John Barry at his impassioned best!
