I hope I'm not the only one here who saw this when it originally ran. It is an all-time SNL skit. The Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time-Players have never been equaled. Also, I actually met Woody Hayes on campus, on the Oval at OSU. He continued to teach military history for several years after he was fired from coaching, and seeing him walking on campus was like meeting Zeus...only Zeus was friendly, personable, looked you in the eye and smiled when he said hello. Woody Hayes is remembered for a few incidents like this...but if more people were half as decent as Wayne Woodrow Hayes, the world would be a far better place. (Also, domestic violence became a much more serious social issue after this ran...and Woody Hayes was never accused of such. Yes, the skit was hilarious).

This is a parody of Woody Hayes striking an opposing player and eventually getting himself fired as coach of the Ohio State football team. At first the Hayes character appears calmly and happily resigned as the former coach who is now enjoying time at home with his wife with whom he is playing an innocent game of checkers. Then he suffers a major setback in the game and punches out his wife. At that point many viewers and I probably laugh.

LOL. Lighten up, Francis. It was actually worse. Woody got fired not only because he punched Charlie Baumann; he got fired because he absolutely refused to apologize for it. The next day, away from the heat of the moment, and he showed no remorse. The OSU AD was Hugh Hindman, a former assistant football coach under Hayes. But Ohio State University President Harold Enarson saved Hindman from firing Hayes by personally firing Woody. He died 8 yrs later at 74. He really wasn't that old, but he had already suffered a heart attack as a coach and considering how tightly wound he was, not surprising his heart didn't have a lot of longevity.
