John Blakemore is, without doubt, one of the finest photographers,
darkroom printers and teachers that the UK has ever produced. His
work is currently held in the photographic collection of the
Birmingham Library and currently holds the position of emeritus
professor of photography at Derby University. John’s landscape
photographs, taken between the years of 1970 and 1980 and his
extensive still life work with tulips are reference points for many for
what a personal photography project can look like. John will be
talking about his landscape photography work, his way of working
with projects and his current experience photographing and
producing handmade books.
In our third talk of the day, John Blakemore discusses the series of reinventions of his photography from his beginnings after leaving the RAF through his large format black and white projects and up to his current 35mm film work taken around his house in Derby.

Superb dedication to photography Fascinating to listen to John Blakemore describing the/his process. A process far removed from my style and life. A photographer who does compose. I prefer for my work, framing. I don't move objects in anyway.. Very pleased with this video. Thank You John. Bravo.

Absolute legend. I was lucky enough to have him as a lecturer at Derby.

Nice to see this video of John. Some people like his images, others don't. I have long been an admirer of his Photography and was lucky enough to attend a workshop with him in 2000 at Duckspool. I like his exploration of tonal values in his prints. Nuff said.

John's Art Council Landscape book came out in the late 70's when I was a photography student at art college and I learnt a lot from his pictures and his working methods. I remember he would carry a 5x4 camera with just one film dark slide, the reason being that he wanted to spend most of his time looking and thinking, not shooting. His aim was one great, meaningful picture, not lots of good enough ones and he had one shot only to get it, a great focus for the mind. In my own working life I would emphasise this occasionally with art directors and clients who wanted me to shoot all the options, ....... 'you only need one picture, so let's concentrate on that and make it a good 'un'. Thank you John.

Glad I found this. I did a still life c&g module in the 90's i think, and I chose John for my photographer essay. Enjoyed seeing his beautiful work again in this lecture. Thank you!

My main takeaway from this was the sequencing of the books. Incredible.

A master photographer and artist. Its amazing the difference between someone such as John and the swathe of poor or mediocrity on youtube and the web these days. Its laughable just what so many call photography
