Technically you are correct but the reaction is often taken as if it is. This norm is also used to save many people in conflicts, even WW2 to save jews from the germans. I would agree with you if I unconditionally supported Israel and its 'defensive' actions and thought that their security more important than anyone elses. Bolton, as an American, speaks in the interest of American global power and dominance. I owe no allegiance to any country, only to my conscience and those I hold dear. Basically, historic conflict is not about taking sides. It is about understanding why events happened the way they did and how the course of history was changed. Bias won't lead to truth.
