John's run with the Fantastic Four in the 80s was, IMHO, the best work he ever did. Sure, he became a star earlier with his X-Men pencils (greatly turned into classic comix by the legend of Terry Austin) . With his Fantastic Four run, he was on his own and at the top of his creative power. It was so good DC seemed to head-hunt him over to revamp Superman, which was another terrific run. Still, I found the Fantastic Four art and stories to be beyond craft. :)

Some of the pages where Human Torch chases the misterious flaming girl reminds me of the story where Byrne reveals (future Galactus herald) Frankie Raye's powers. In the end seems he was able to use his own original idea during his second run on F4, as both writer and artist.

Another great one guys. I was more of an Amazing Heroes reader, but good on Comics Interview for printing the entire 30 pages. Good stuff.

Great early Byrne pencil work, even it heavily influenced by Kirby.

This would also be used by Jim Lee as a personal training book.

Man, when I was a kid , John Byrne was like a god . I would go to the drug store every month to snag the latest XMen. His iron fist was what first snagged me and then his style improved and wow. In his day he was the shit. Then I grew up and discovered he was a pompous a hole. Never meet your hero.

Comics Interview! Nice. Before the internet, this Blip, Dragon or comics letter pages were as close as I got to behinds the scenes. I still remember being blown away by the Avengers/JLA crossover cover when I spotted it on the store shelf, cover facing out. I was quickly disappointed that it wasn't a comic, but then getting to at least see art that had been made for the failed project. Future crossovers that actually made it to publication were still not as exciting (except the 4 part one with Superman hold Cap's shield and Thor' hammer) as it because these were my DC heroes, pre-Crisis Earth-One.

Not too long ago I found out that Byrne has been drawing his own X-men comics as "fan fiction" on the Byrne Robotics message board. There's a lot of it (like multiple issues) and it looks great: m.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=55094&TPN=1

I wonder who has the original pencils. It would be awesome to see this finished and printed as a complete comic book. This story contains a number of FF antagonists from the peak of the Lee\Kirby run. FYI: @ 10:32 "Look at that guy" , that's not a guy. That's the Mad Thinker's Android from FF 71 & 72. There's often some really great material to be found in the various Fanzines from back in the day. I was buying and collecting them all through the 80's. and 90's and also collected many from the 70's and have many issues of Comic's Interview but I don't recall this one. Great stuff.

John bryne. My favourite penciller/artist of all time have got most of his comic starting with early Charlton work he has his own unique style imitated by other artists including Chris malgrain, bryne able to draw like any one he wants to homage!

Oh lord, I was reading Faust when I was like 12. I drew a promo poster for a Tim Vigil appearance at a local comics shop and spent the whole day hounding Vigil with ridiculous questions like "Who would win in a fight? Faust or Wolverine?" "Are Faust's claws part of his gloves or part of him?" "Are they magic?" I did buy a sketch though making sure to tell him not to "use his imagination" since I had watched him draw a bunch of extreme shit for people all day. This is looking real Kirby but also very Byrne because Byrne is very Kirby.

I love your channel. Love your comics. Have you thought of doing a channel about your process how you create your own comics? How you use Photoshop or whatever program? What brushes you use. Do you use a Gradient map...you get the idea. Being a developing comic book artist myself I would purchase any courses you offered. Keep up the good work.

Never even HEARD of this before! This is amazing early work! (Although, in '74, Byrne would have been 24 years old, so he wasn't like a teenager submitting this stuff. Still....) The Kirby force is strong with this one! Especially the depictions of 'KIrby tech' and a lot of the FACES. But there are signature Byrne pose on pages at 8:14 and 8:30, and other places. Thanks so much for posting this largely unknown chapter of comics history!

Visited John Byrne in 1975 in Calgary. He showed us a typical pencilled page by a famous artist who was following a script using the Marvel method. Terrible, sketchy art. Then he showed us his pencils for the upcoming Marvel Team-up (issue 54?). Unbelievable. complete, detailed, did not need an inker.

IIRC, Byrne claims this was an unauthorized publication based on his sketchbooks which were never returned to him. Solson was in infamous publisher in the 80's B&W explosion, run by Sol Brodsky's son ("Sol's Son") with Rich Buckler's involvement.
