Some of my best memories were watching SCTV. They used to rerun them on TV early in the morning in Virginia in the 80's for some reason. All those people were so funny. Joe Flaherty, John Candy, Eugene Levy. So funny.

I discovered SCTV on Nick at Nite in fall 1988...though I vaguely recall seeing the show (not knowing what it was at the time) in summer of 1981. It was Eugene's Gino Vannelli parody, where he turns into a gorilla whilst performing "I Just Wanna Stop". Scared the heck out of me, as I was only 5 or so at the time.

In 1982, I worked as a busboy at a restaurant called the "Flying Food Circus" in Yorkville. It was owned by the same company that ran Second City in Toronto. Joe Flaherty came in by himself to have dinner one night. Surprised that nobody else recognized him but me, not even the waitress serving him. Thought about asking for his autograph and telling him his Count Floyd segments was the funniest bit on the show especially when he gets enraged that the movie is not remotely scary and starts howling. But I chickened out thinking I'd could get fired.

I worked at a golf course in S.C. and cooked a simple cheeseburger for Robert Redford and the whole time couldn't figure where I knew him from. When he was done eating i decided to go talk to him. Didn't take long for me to figure out who he was and had a conversation with him for over an hour. No one wanted to say anything about me not doing my job until he drove away. Once he was gone i became the famous person in the room. Everyone wanted to know what we talked about, but I wouldn't tell them. The next day I was wrote up for not doing my job. Worth every minute. Have to take chances in life. I became the head chef, and then the manager of the place before I decided to make a career change and work for myself. Our conversation was about chasing your dreams and not giving up on them. Now I own a shop building vehicles from the ground up,just doing what I love for a living.

What makes shows like this even better is when you see them again. Sure a lot of the skits were corny but that's what they were all about. Decades later when many of the cast members move on to some bigger and better things, you gain a more appreciation of them. Kinda like fine wine. Now we get to see these skits again with that in mind and they are even better than they were. I loved this show so much growing up. It was my favourite show. I remember coming home late one evening with my parents (I was almost 12), and I turned on the tv. SCTV just happened to be playing, and I remember the very first skit I ever saw. A man (Joe Flaherty) is telling his young son a couple of scary bedtime stories, and the second one is so frightening that the boy dies of shock. (That doesn't sound funny at all, but it was!!) Joe's casual observation of what he had done cracked me up. I was laughing hysterically and looked up the name of the show in the TV guide. I was hooked ever since. I loved all of the cast, including early cast member Harold Ramis, and later cast member Martin Short. I was happy that all of them went onto very successful careers...except for poor Joe Flaherty. He won my heart in that scene and was always my favourite cast member. He's kept busy throughout the years, but unfortunately never achieved the fame and acclaim that his costars did.
