What amuses me is how the presenter attributes so much skill to the painter. I saw a contact photo that he took in 1928 and used to make one of these paintings. He didn't arrange the composition in a talented way, he didn't make a certain line go in a certain direction, he didn't add a stopping point--Mother Nature did all of that! He just painted from the photo. Granted, he selected the view and decided where to point the camera, which certainly takes talent, but Mother Nature did all the precise composing.

I really enjoyed your analysis of the selected paintings by Carlson. It was wonderful to experience Carlson’s work through the eyes of an artist. Your voice was pitch perfect, and the length and speed was also perfect for the material. I look forward to more of your presentations.

I am reading Carlson’s book right now, and this video helped me tremendously! Given that his book is black and white, it makes a a lot of his explanation of the use of color a little hard to grasp. You brought it home for me Brandon! Thanks and peace!

I really enjoyed your art appreciation class, enabling me to appreciate art. It's interesting to see the work from the artists viewpoint, the techniques, tactics, the artistry. Great stuff. May I suggest a breakdown of artist Vern Broe? In the mid 80s my wife, kids and I vacationed on Cape Cod, and was drawn to a gallery featuring his paintings of catboats. Absolutely fabulous! We wished (still do) that we could have indulged in at least one of them - ah, but which one?

Learn so much from these breakdowns. Long vids not a problem. Would like to see Clyde Aspevig, Jim Wilcox, Scott Christensen. Careful copyrights may play into this.

There is a Canadian painter named Tom Thomson who painted from 1913-1917 who had a very similar colour sense - colours that you'd never think would work together, but they do ... amazing self-taught painter who died at only 39 under mysterious circumstances - some say accident, others murdered ... no one really knows. That said, he painted some of the most iconic Canadian paintings that are revered today by many. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_River_(painting)#/media/File:Tom_Thomson,_Northern_River.jpg
