I never understood the claim the film's ending was depressing (nihilistic). The nature of the Thing makes it very unlikely anyone will triumph against it. The characters show nobility and courage and many willingly sacrifice themselves to save humanity. That is inspiring, not depressing.

Agree completely. It was solely because of the E.T. comparison. Ironically, I don’t think E.T. aged nearly as well seeing as how I’ve seen it once, never feeling the need to revisit. At the same time, I pop in The Thing annually if not more so. Carpenter said he was a bit surprised by the critical response, but was completely taken aback that even horror fans seemingly abandoned the film at the box office. Boy has he been vindicated. It’s his best film. Something must have been in the water back in the day. I don’t know what the hell people were thinking.

@@davidechavez-valdez6967 I grew up at that time and the general feeling of critics was that the film was unbalanced towards the effects. Also that the emotional range of the film was very narrowly focused. It was about 5 years ahead of its time in terms of gore. 'Pyscho' received a similar response on its release. I read the Lancaster draft of the script at Outpost 31 website and it was more conventional horror/thriller for the scenes with the creature, especially the final confrontation. The problem I have with the extended creature scenes in the film is that they go on so long that they start to create logic issues. Why does Palmer/Thing only attack Windows? Why do the three tied to the couch not get any blood/alien slime on them? When the Norris/spider head scuttles out of the infirmary, the characters should see it earlier, because it is leaving through the door they had been standing near shortly before and their line of sight shouldn't be impaired.

Mac flamethrower malfunctioning from being dropped on the floor is the only thing that prevents Palmer from being incinerated quickly. Palmer is then disposed of by Mac. It's really bad strategy. Palmer doesn't even give Mac multiple contaminated humans to contend with.

In winter 1985, I worked up in northern B.C (Fort Ware) on a camp similar to this movie, and not far from where they shot 'The Thing'. I installed carpets for the native Indians that lived in that area. Gov't funded project forced on them. They couldn't have cared less about getting new carpets. They found the white man's presence so intrusive, many of the older men moved into the woods to live on their own. We drove until the road ended, then took a small plane in. Totally snowed in for a week, we would watch 'The Thing' on TV with the other camp workers. One morning, I am eating breakfast and one of the camp guys tells us that a native kid had died the previous night from inhaling glue, glue which he had stolen from us. (we had glue cans for the carpets). He then went on to describe how this kid was lying dead on the same breakfast table I was currently eating from. I almost got sick while they made jokes about using his toes for candle holders. The entire atmosphere of the camp and the workers was exactly like the movie, except we were dealing with actual terror. We finished the job, and were the first to leave the camp. We had 20 minutes to fly out through a small, quickly closing hole in the clouds and the tiny plane was hitting so much turbulence, I was being thrown around the back of it, completely freaking out. The pilot then yells, "What's that smell?" Fumes! I thought we were going down only to discover a container of solvent had fallen over and opened up. Put some Morricone on that soundtrack.

mac TOLD him if blair comes back alone BURN HIM. So he's probably doing just that. Blair got out through his tunnel, ran back and opened the door and covered the boards. He left the door open to confuse them. He snuck into the base and distracted childs, then Childs left his post to look around and blair opened the coatroom door AGAIN as a distraction but hid back in that other room (he likes to leave doors open to confuse and the other door he's probably hiding behind). Child's POV - he hears the snow blowing in or the door open - and comes back and looks 4 ways (hallway, generator, coatroom and other room - where blair would have got him) and chooses the open door. The POV shot is HIS not blair's. If he'd have gone into the other room blair would have got him pop up style like garry from behind the door. If he'd have gone to generator blair would have got him. If he'd have gone down the hallway, blair would have turned off the generator and then got him. Instead, he runs out (imo the dog should have ran off in the end. I like that and re-cut my own to include it. I think childs saw the dog) either cuz something got his attention OR he just fell for the open door ploy like mac, gary and nauhls did and blair snuck down to the generator. Childs got lost in the storm in the dark and with no goggles until the fire lit his way. Mac and childs sit down - it's only them left and each are armed. Childs isn't the thing cuz he says but may or may not be and not even he knows...they share a drink and mac realizes if childs isn't infected he may be now due to the sharing of the drink (which only he and fuchs knew about)... HE laughs because he's an ALCOHOLIC (we've seen it throughout the movie) and is gonna drink from the bottle. So either they die in the cold or the thing will win... Cheating bitch. The dog would have brought the movie full circle but this brings the kurt russell character full circle - right back to when we first see him alone playing chess.

His cover story is very out of character. Earlier in the movie, he wanted to leave Mac outside, not open the door. I don't think he'd be running outside after Blair. There are a few other things that point to it too, but the breath/coat theories are debunked.

It was a bit of a cop out to me. All this stuff happens and that's it? Macready could have at least died in the cold after killing the Thing. That would have been perfect, the Thing being dead but at the end of the day Mac couldn't escape.

“This is a very serious movie. Very little humor in this one.” They then proceed to spend the next hour and a half, cracking up at all of the dark humor in the movie. That’s one of the aspects of “The Thing” that makes it so great, IMHO. There are so many moments of levity, intentional or otherwise, that perfectly counterbalance the pervasive dread and tension of the film.

The Thing is one of my favorite movies ever. And as much as I appreciate the effort that went into the prequel, it was basically a high budget poorly written fan film and on top of that the studio intervention on what would have made a better movie pisses me off. This movie is just timeless. I showed this to a friend of mine who'd honestly never seen horror films with practical effects and he was seriously grossed out, and he watches more modern CG horror flicks. Everything about this movie from the atmosphere to the storytelling...it's just top notch and I hate that JC is relegated to 'B Movie Director' status when this is as good as any A list director's efforts. Also props to the cast...ugh, this movie...it shouldn't have cult status, it should just have STATUS with all caps.

What I never understood is that they argue about "if you know or not if you have been taken over". When you get taken over you die = The Thing kills you and copies your cells and becomes you. Of course The Thing knows it's own self when it walks around as a copy of you. Why else would someone destroy the blood test? Also if you read the book "who goes there" it explains it perfectly. The Thing gets all the memories and character traits of the person it takes over.

People get so confused because this alien is REALLY good at copying every organic detail, mannerism and disease, to the point they think the host dies once the thing reveals itself.

Not exactly.. there's no determine time rate for infection as it relates to death or complete takeover, quite possible of intermediate stage of infection where portion of the thing so small hasn't completely taking over The Host or develop the sense of immediate fight or flight defense so it temporary state of ignorance of infection is quite possible

@@johnscott6481 okay, so you don't understand this process at all. the thing REPLACES you. it's not really an "infection". it breaks you down, digests, and absorbs your properties. that's why you see a half digested dog lying on the floor of the kennel after the men discover it.

Think about it this way: if you get infected slowly, say, from food consomption, and the thing's cells slowly begin assimilating your cells until they've taken you over completely, BUT they keep up the act the whole way through... would you realize you were infected? If the thing is doing a perfect simulation of a given person, does the simulation have complete awareness of its alien nature? Think of it like a method actor that gets so involved in their role they forget who they really are for a bit. I imagine the best way for the thing to act highly believable is for the imitations to temporarily believe they are human.
